Texas, which may balance its budget by firing thousands of teachers, plans to commit $25 million in state funds to Formula One auto racing each year for a decade.

Four years after motorsports’ most popular series left the U.S., Texas investors including Clear Channel Communications Inc. co-founder B.J. “Red” McCombs are building a 3.4-mile (5.5-kilometer) track to bring the event to Austin. Comptroller Susan Combs has agreed to pay $25 million for races through 2022, a subsidy questioned by critics and lawmakers as the state cuts costs to close an estimated $15 billion two-year deficit.

“I don’t understand why 25 people in Austin could not put up $1 million each if they thought this was a good opportunity instead of the state making a $25 million commitment,” said Senator Dan Patrick, a Houston Republican. “The developers should find the money through private sources.”

maybe I was wrong about Patrick..just a little?

Patrick is a true conservative/capitalist. Free public education is a socialist/liberal idea. The only thing Ive found that Dan Patrick truly hates is HS football. He definitely hates that.

Dan Patrick does not hate HS football, he just hates the excessive money spent on stadiums used only a few times each year and the million + dollars that school districts spend on artifical turf for practice fields as in Katy. He has a bill to limit the amount a bond may be used on sports stadium. Remember all of this is EXTRACURRICULAR.

ok I don't know what has gotten in to me but I have to agree..with you and Patrick.....it's all excess.............the game is still played on the same size field no matter what the stands look like and I to have never understood why we need jumbotrons....four story pressboxes etc.........................the only thing I can figure is that those same people on this board bashing waste in education (the classroom part)..........are the same that love to brag about the size of their stadium and the jumbotron....and their big blow up run throughs.

No, he truly despises the emphasis that is put on football in Texas(he's from Maryland, so it's understandable). He's made several negative references to football before this year, and many of them had nothing to do with money or budget issues. He truly hates HS football.

he can gripe about if he wants thing is..those stadiums are voted on by the community and uses money that cant be used for salaries..If the people in that ISD are willing to pay for it why does he care?

Same reasons that some supts would rather have a losing football program than a winning one. It becomes bigger than they are or takes emphasis off the things that are important to them(usually arts or band).
Plus, let's be honest, bond elections usually aren't held under the most ethical of circumstances. They're NEVER held at the same time as a major election and many times they're brought back after they've been voted down many times. But, like in the case of Allen, it was overwhelmingly approved on the first take.

I can also tell you this much, Sen. Patrick has a bill that would add 1 penny to the sales tax for education. He wants in exchange for this sales tax hike a reduction of 5 cents on the school propety rates. His figures show that schools come out far ahead with this. His goal is to have education funded by sales tax and this way everyone has skin in the game and not just the home or land owners.

i hear yeah....I remember reading about the building of the stadium in San Bentio in the Valley....very poor community but spent a lot of money to build Bobby Marrow stadium.....in summary the Community took a lot of Pride in the stadium being built.

it's their money......you re right.

I would support a property-for-sales-tax swap 100%.

Ernest T, you are correct, those bond elections are rigged from the start. These boards know that if they put it when everyone comes out for major elections, they are voted down.

The first time is usually 100% legit, and they slowly lose it with each added attempt. I'd be in favor of a limit on how many times it can be propsed.

In Brownwood the alumni payed for the renovation of Gordon Wood Stadium 100% with no increase in taxes. Sounds like a great idea with the sales tax..that way everyone gets to contribute to School Taxes!! Wait...I thought the Lotto was going to do this...LOL I pay out the Wazoo here in Cedar Park!!

Does anyone remember the Luv You Blue days in Houston??

Back then he was a sports guy on channel 11 I think and one of the years, he painted himself blue and did sports on the news like that.

He loves football, it's just the excess he has issues with.

BTW - he was against public money being used for Reliant and Minute Made also!

Yes, you are. They claimed it would benefit public schools, but there is no such thing as an "education fund", so the money just gets thrown into the General Funds.

It's high school football he hates. Maybe b/c it's publically funded. But he definitely can't stand the devotion to HS football in Texas.

He is not against it. His son played for Katy Taylor. He just does not want public money used for EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES AND WASTEFUL STADIUMS THAT ONLY GET USED A FEW TIMES EACH YEAR. His goal is to have sales tax replace the current property tax when it comes to school fin. He has a study that shows it will cost the average person about $750 a year in sales tax to replace each $2500 now paid in property tax. As he points out, more people will pay into the system, so everyone legal and illegal will have skin in the game. Schools would be fully funded then.

This is great. I heard yesterday that this was Rick Perrys plan from the beginning. Make a huge crisis and solve it by increasing the sales tax. Come out a hero and run for President.
Now it is all coming out...

I will vote for anyone, even Rick Perry, for President if they can get rid of all income, property, and corporate taxes, and they implement the FAIR TAX.
