Under HB 2038, which was filed by state Rep. Walter "Four" Price, R-Amarillo, public schools would be required to follow a protocol developed by state education officials to deal with students who get concussions during school-sponsored athletic practices or other events. Students who are diagnosed with a concussion or who are suspected to have sustained one would be immediately removed from play. They wouldn't be allowed back on the field until a doctor signs a release. The bill would also require that coaches be trained about concussions and that schools create concussion oversight teams.

Why are state education officials more qualified than the certified athletic trainer and team doctor on our sideline to make this decision?

as some one who as broadcast and coach I have seen coaches pressure the trainers into letting players back on the field, so maybe an outside source is not so much of a bad thing

Correctly said, the head feetsball coach MUST WIN to save his job. If this means putting pressure on the trainer, guess who is the trainers boss. With advancements in medical science and more emphsis on Chronic traumatic encephalopathy a lot of high school age athletics are at extreme risk for more problems later in life. Look at the sad case of Dave Duerson who took his own life, the link attached is how it this brain showed advance signs of this disease. I hope there is a strong policy in place this feetsball season.

Pure ignorance if you think a coach would do that. There is no defense for a coach to stand on if the kid get badly injured and pressured the trainer to release the athlete. Lawsuit city. The coach completely agrees with the trainer or fires the trainer at the end of the year.
If the trainer thikns he/she gets fired for going against the coach on a medical decision, lawsuit city again!
The trainer has total authority on evaluating a kid everywhere I have been for the last 25 years.

Must be living somewhere other that Texas. If the AD/Head feetsball coach want you gone, they will find a reason to ask you to resign. You may file a lawsuit, I have seen many, but there will soon be an undisclosed settlement. Remember, these school districts have lawyers on speed dial and the Supt. will support the Head Feetsball coach. Who do you think can hold out longer the trainer or district?

Texas for the last 20 years.
When there is a discussion on any medical question, it goes to the trainer, not the coach. Now if we are talking about playing on a sprained ankle, who cares? But a concussion???? Have you even seen the current UIL mandated protocol??? Oh here it is.

A coach would be a fool to tell a trainer, he is going back in after the trainer has said they are not cleared to play, if the trainer is following current guidelines.
This bill once again is a bunch of bull.
