I let it load then just fast-forwarded through it. It looked like that guy kept taking his safety hook off the tower and strapping it to himself......surely there was some other safety precaution besides that!!!!

osha doesn't require safety line while climbing because it could get in the way and slow the climber down...he was not hooked to anything for 90% of the climb...
it is explained better in the video...

I haven't been that high, but have been on top of a 1,000 footer for as much as eight hours a day. Of course, I was much younger back then and not nearly as wise as I am now.;)(Also didn't have to actually climb, just rode an elevator)

You have to be about 1/2 crazy to work on tower crews to start with. I've worked with some that just scared me to death with some of their actions.

I've watched them straddle a 2 in angle iron guard rail and walk across it 1000 ft in the air. No safety belt tied off, nothing. I've watched them ride the load on winch lines, I've watched them work in high winds. They're ALL nutz!

I can't be the only one that repeatedly said eff that during the video...

Not anywhere near that bad, but my first year coaching some of the older guys thought it would be funny to tell me that one of my duties was to change the stadium lights. I got about 3/4 of the way up the first pole before they told me it was a joke.
I was scared to death, but I wasn't about to let them know it. They never dared me to do anything else again.

I used to work on a swinging stage glazing buildings from the outside in DFW. The tallest was 62 floors. I wasn't scared on that but they don't print the kind of money it would take for me to climb that tower. Uh Uh No siree Bob!

I know I said "Holy cr**" twenty times! At one point, it looked like the tower designers said "we'll just let them figure out how to get past this part...". Then throw in razor wire and 10 mph winds. I said to myself they better earn over 100k per climb or it's not worth it.

My father- in- law used to be the pipeline superintendent for American PretoFina's crude oil pipeline for the line that ran from Beaumont to the refinery in Big Spring. Every "so many" miles they had pump stations that had microwave communication towers that were several hundred feet tall and of course, the light at the tops of these towers had to occasionally be changed. One time he went to the pump station in Zephyr and found the body of the guy who was changing the light. He said there was no way to tell exactly how far he fell but it must have been high because he was a real mess. He said that those guys had always made him nervous because he had seen them cut corners on their own safety too many times. They can get away with something over and over again....until they don't and then you find their body.

That is flat out insane. There is not enough money for me to even attempt to climb that high. I tired to climb a 120 ft water tower one time and only made it up iabout 50 ft and said screw this and came back down to good ole earth.
