Sad news today. My friend and colleague, Coach Mike Davis, died tragically in a boating accident. Typical of Mike, he died trying to save a child and ended up giving his life in the effort. Coach Davis coached at West Brazos Jr. High and taught Texas history. Coach Davis was a stand-up guy who was loved by all the children at school. There is a huge hole in my heart.

Mike and his wife,Tien, have two small children.

LAKE JACKSON — Michael Anthony Davis’ final act was jumping into the water to try and save a child who had fallen overboard.
Davis, 33 of Lake Jackson, his wife, Tien, their two children and two of their children’s friends had been out boating near the Brazos River bridge on FM 2004 at about 1:45 p.m. Saturday, said Lake Jackson Police Lt. Rick Park.

When their 14-foot Carolina Skiff had mechanical problems, they started heading back to the ramp, said Lake Jackson Police Sgt. Ron Rodriguez. One of his children’s friends, a 3-year-old boy, fell in the water.
The children, ages 5, 4, 3 and 2, all were wearing life vests, Rodriguez said, but the adults were not.
Davis jumped into the water to pull him out, but he had drifted too far away from him, Rodriguez said, leaving the two both struggling in the water.
Two Houston fishermen standing on the shore saw what was going on, police said.
“One jumps in the water, gets hold of the little boy and pulls him to the bank,” Rodriguez said. “The other fisherman jumps into the boat to try to take it to save (Davis), but the boat has mechanical problems. They can’t reach him, and the last time they see him, he’s drifting under the water.”
Michael Davis coached football, basketball and track at West Brazos Junior High for eight years and taught 7th grade Texas history.
He leaves behind his wife, Tien, and two children, Ashlinh, 2, and Anthony, 4.
Michael and Tien Davis were high school sweethearts at Angleton High School who married in 2004.
“He was just a wonderful person,” Tien Davis said. “I want people to remember that.”
Tien Davis said her husband could swim and she does not know what happened.
“We have no idea,” Tien Davis said. “I don’t understand how he couldn’t swim to the side.”
His body will go to the Galveston County Medical Examiners Office for an autopsy.
There was no alcohol in the boat and Davis had not been drinking.
Police received the 911 call at 1:43 p.m. Saturday, and “we were there within three or four minutes,” Park said.
Davis was found at 2:26 p.m., when he was pulled from the water, said Police Officer Olivia Franklin.
Rodriguez said he and another officer found the boat could only go in reverse, but they still used the boat to go back and forth along the river in the attempt to rescue Davis.
Brazoria County Dive Team, a unit of the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office, assisted in the search, but strong currents prevented them from scuba diving, police said.
Also assisting were the Coast Guard and Gulf Coast Rescue Squad, Rodriguez said, who used boats to ultimately find Davis’ body under the water about 75 feet from the bank.

I Agree. Coach Davis was honestly the nicest teacher/coach I ever met in all my years in school. He was a great man to look up to and its a shame he was taken from his family in such a tragic way:(

I had a few opportunities to meet with, coach against, and just talk to this young man. He was truly a great man. I admired him and learned much from him in our few dealings. His wife and children will miss a great man as will the students of Columbia. He was indeed a hero. My prayers are with them as well as the people of Columbia

Thanks for the sticky. We have had a very trying two days at school and it is great to see the Downlowers living up to their reputation with the posts. Coach Davis was an A&M grad and we had a maroon out on Monday. It seems some of the area schools and Brazosport College joined in. Even a school in Tennessee where a friend of a friend works joined in. The response by everyone has been great. The staff here at West Brazos Jr. High have really come to appreciate the depth of loss that we have suffered. Mike Davis has touched lives far and wide.
