The drive down I-35 TO the Mexican border is what's dangerous. Man I hate driving down that road.

Yea--it does take you a while---especially when the police meet you at the city limits of each town and escort you through, making sure you don't stop.....:D

I was referring to the stretch from Oklahoma City to San Antonio putting up with idiots and their vehicles. Man we have some bad drivers on that highway.

we went to mexico (playa del carmen) for our honeymoon in october and we never felt like we were in any kind of danger...

we even wandered into the shops and city streets of playa at night, that's when the mariachi bands are out in full force and it really feels like mexico...

we only got asked if we wanted to buy pot three times, but it was all by the same guy on the same night...

Went to the same place for the same reason. Where did you stay?

We stayed at the Gran Porto Real (http://www.realresorts.com/Gran_Porto_Real/).

Nice place with a couple of pretty good restaurants in it.

I think that was right across the street from ours. They are 'sister' resorts, or whatever. I think that one was nicer than our place.

I read an article about several cruise lines refusing to stop at Mazatlan, and considering suspending stops at other mexican resorts as well. Too many passengers getting mugged/kidnapped etc.. and trying to sue the cruise lines.

You should be OK...just be aware of the little bar on the beach on the other side of the island. (think it was called "La Tortuga" or something pertaining to a turtle.) That dude has a monkey trained to pull your top off! And he's quick! Got my wife! Oh, I forgot. If you snorkle along the reefs, don't brush up against the coral. You will get stung and it burns like hell....

Just like any other place, you gotta be careful and aware of your surroundings in the resort places. Personally I'd still stay away from those places but do what you want. BUT I wouldn't go to Juarez, Pedrias Negras, Nuevo Laredo, Acuna, Matamoras, etc for a million dollars.

Look closely at their vehicles. You will notice they are either Prius pricks or Toyota ticks.
