we are going to put new locks/dead bolts on the doors of our house....

as of now, they all have old, brass knobs and dead bolts and we are swapping them out for satin nickel knobs, dead bolts, and an electronic keypad deadbolt for the front door...

my question is, after we have all the deadbolts that we want, how do we make them all work with the same key?

not necessarily the house key we have now, but one common key for the new ones....

this is the electronic one we are getting...

Maybe Home Depot or Lowes can rekey?

Depending on the brand it will show you in the instructions how to do it. Just make sure and get all the same brand locks, it's pretty easy.

Home Depot, Lowes or any hardware store can key all the locks the same provided they are all the same brand.

If you buy them at the store, they all have the key code on the box, and usually you can get matching ones without having to re key any of them.

Nice-looking lock. The wife and I are looking at this one ourselves.

the schlage's are probably the best residential lock however they are more difficult to re-key... you will also probably lock yourself out at least once with them

got our electronic lock installed today...

turns out, lowes will price match amazon.com so we got the electronic dead bolt and a door knob for the front door, going to see how it all looks when it's done - and get the rest online...

going to have to find somebody to make all the locks work with the key that came with the electronic lock though....

Looks great. I hope it works well for you. Part of me still wants to hold out for one of the fingerprint scanning locks, but they're reviewed pretty horribly. I think I'll stick with the keypad lock.

The first thing you have to make sure is that they are the same keyway. If the profile of your key in the keypad lock does not match the keyway of your mechanical locks then you cannot key them alike. The first step is you have to be able to stick the key in. Then they have to have the same number of pins. 5, 6, or 7. More than likely you have 6 pin locks. 5 are really cheap. 7 are usually commercial with several levels of keying. They may charge you 5 bucks or so per lock.

Jason,

You can buy smart locks for the rest of your doors. This is what I had to do when I bought my home a year and a half ago and wanted to change them all out but have one key for all locks. Smart locks come programmed to work with the key in their package, but they also come with a device that you insert in to the lock, then put the key in the lock that you want operate the lock, and it reprograms them. It is very easy to do and has instructions on the package. You could buy smart locks for your other doors and then reprogram them with the key that goes to your electronic lock on your front door.

Just make sure you get a nice set of knockers to go with them!
