McCutchen had been the athletic director for SAISD since May 2008.
San Angelo Independent School District Athletic Director Doug McCutchen died Tuesday evening, almost a week after he suffered an allergic reaction to pre-surgery drugs that put him in critical condition.

McCutchen, 61, went to Community Medical Center on Jan. 19 for a relatively simple procedure to eliminate acid reflux when the reaction occurred. He had been in "critical but stable" condition since then.

"San Angelo ISD mourns the loss of (McCutchen), who brought the heart of a champion to our district," SAISD Superintendent Carol Ann Bonds said Tuesday. "Doug was a champion player, coach and athletic director. From the moment he arrived as executive director of athletics, he built on the legacy of success of those who had served before him. He was a master at recruiting winning coaches.

"Without a doubt, his brilliance was in mentoring coaches in every aspect of their jobs. Never seeking credit or the limelight, his proudest moments were when his coaches were soaring."

Bonds said a memorial service is planned at First Baptist Church and the funeral will be held in Bronte. Dates for the services were not available late Tuesday.

McCutchen was a star football player at Bronte High School and Texas Tech University and had been the athletic director for SAISD since May 2008. He began his career as a Central assistant in 1973.

In between, McCutchen worked as an assistant at Texas A&I (now A&M-Kingsville) and as a head coach at Liberty, Klein Forest, Midland High, Duncanville and Amarillo Tascosa.

He also was the AD at Spring Independent School District for eight years before coming back to San Angelo.

McCutchen is well-known for having lost the famous three-way coin flip in 1988 with Odessa Permian's Gary Gaines and Midland Lee's Earl Miller — a moment that was immortalized in "Friday Night Lights" (the book and the movie).

As a running back at Texas Tech, McCutchen led the Southwest Conference in rushing in 1970.

"Doug's wisdom in problem-solving, his sense of humor in daily occurrences, his passion for excellence, his deep integrity, and his genuine love of people were all measures of his greatness," Bonds said. "Though his time with us was brief, we are all blessed beyond measure by having known him."

That is really sad! I worked with his son Chad for a few years, and they are a great family! What a tragedy!

Played against him and his brother Keith in softball, the man had tree trunks for arms.

Prayers for his family.
