Yes, but it depends on what tv package they have. I have Directv but the channel should be 416 if they have it. You do not have to have a sports back I do not believe...but you have to have more than the lower package.

Wow. Coldspring has been able to run the ball quite effectively so far. Defensively they have done a good job of shutting down the run game from Carthage for the most part. They will have to find a way to stop the passing game to pull this one out.

Great performance by the Dog O line tonight. After watching Highschool football for 35 years I can say with out a doubt, the Carthage QB is the most accurate passer I have seen in a long time. I hope some D1 schools give this young man a chance. He never gets rattled under pressure and he puts the ball in tight spaces where only the receiver can catch it. This Dog team may be better than the last two. I have not seen a team so well balanced. Brownwood was by far the second best team this year and Carthage beat them with the run and tonight they beat a great running team with the pass. The Carthage Coach if he stays will have Carthage in the hunt for a title every year, they take a brand new Oline and turn it into the best in the state. They have many starters coming back, and another QB in the making. This is 4 state titles for the head coach, I hope he stays. We at Tatum are blessed to have one of the best coaches in the state in Andy Evans. Carthage knows what they have in Coach Suratt, they need to match any offer made from other schools to keep him. If he stays, 3A will just have to get use to the Dogs going deep every year. Coldspring congrats on a great team this year, you did not get to this game by accident.

i saw this and wanted to respond, coldspring (and san jacinto county) has over a 50% population of second home owners, meaning retirees or houston residents owning second homes here....not any students to draw from retirees....the lake (lake livingston), besides having primarily retirees, has four other school districts drawing from it, livingston, trinity, onalaska, and huntsville, so few students live there....there are no developments throughout the county as the primary county occupant is a federal and state forest reserve....

the only way coldspring brings in the few students they have is to draw from as far away as huntsville and i can tell you from having driven some of these kids home over the years that some of them live down pig tail, gravel forest roads that have them traveling 45 minutes each way to school, a REAL hardship to practice football, get home and get any studying time in....

i've been preaching this for years but i challenge anyone, just for simplicity sake, to take the number of classrooms in the high school, divide that number into the supposed student count we have, and try to squeeze that many kids into each class.....its a joke....the people that count us at 500+ each time must be stopping at the county liquor store before arriving, there has never been a yearbook count in the 500's in the history of the school, its a joke, we are as 2a as can be....

i've always thought we know what kids in far west texas tolerate with the travel time to school, i think we're as close as can be to that situation without the dirt and dust....

Trojandad, maybe I am not understanding you. Are you saying you think CS turns in higher enrollment numbers than what the true enrollment is? Even if that were true, which seems unlikely, why would they do that? What's the benefit?

no, quite the opposite, the official "count" is far above the number of students we have....there just aren't the souls in that area to justify the school counts....if we had the population they say we have, we'd have a larger town, more businesses, all the trappings that come with population....if any of you drive through coldspring and then, for instance, drive through kirbyville, and the possibility of our school having similar numbers is not statistically possible, yet our numbers are 100+ higher....

and yes, i know, the argument always comes out that "we don't know how they take counts"....eight years ago a group of local businessmen got tired of these counts and, not having an ally in the head muckyty mucks office, hired several attys to gather all info with uil on dates inspected, assumptions of seasonal students, etc etc, i'm not the god of all school population counts but i'm far from a novice about it, i've compared every count for the last two decades with the counts available from six other governmental agencies creating the same counts, and the uil counts are always substantially higher for us than, say, other schools surrounding us, such as shepherd, tarkington, etc...they, in fact, show lower counts with uil than with the other agencies....

i'm at least glad to see we're back to competing on the 3a level again because the frustration of moving down just became a silly issue with uil....

Yea I've been to Coldspring once and they town wasnt very large, the baseball coach was pretty nice though. Although a couple of those Tarkington fans pissed me off lol

The number turned in to the UIL is the same number turned in to the TEA for funding purposes. The principal for the school is responsible to report accurate enrollment numbers and I cannot imagine a situation that would motivate him/her to falsify those numbers. If they turn in a number to the TEA (the UIL uses this number) and the school is paid for more students than are actually enrolled and the school is audited, the school would be on the hook for repaying the money. If there were a pattern of misrepresenting the number and overpayment by the state, I am sure there would be disciplinary action taken by the state. Once again, I think that you are misinformed.

I think you are correct in that he could be misinformed regarding who reports the number. That's a common misconception. There is not am official "count" of heads done by outsiders, but an enrollment number is submitted by the school on "snapshot" day. Anyway, like you said many people are confused about this. Either way...way to go Cold Spring!

i completely understand the tea counts, and without making it a huge debate issue heere that can't be talked about without getting the thread stopped, many other avenues of district funding are predicated on larger counts....remember, the first point i made about the "count" issue was not having the administration's backing on counts volunteered by the district....many facets of a school district are benefitted for higher counts, its just one of them isn't the sports teams.....

one reason i can say for motivation to produce larger numbers is simply the cost benefit for transportation...as i said, our district travels ungodly mileage each year just to pick up the few students we can get because of the vast unpopulated national forest acreage, the mileage rebate the state volunteers doesn't begin to cover the annual expenses, such exists another reason to make sure number reporting is at a premium....

if another comparison is needed for an example, look how far down the elementary numbers are below the upper grades, our elementary numbers are far more than those, i have no idea why they minimize those....

its just sad because we have several friends in the high school administration that are on our side of wanting the school to be downsized to 2a, and their counts are very different from what's on the official roles, they just can't risk their job fighting it....

but as ccmom said, can't complain much when the guys fought as hard as they did and made it this far, just gotta count our blessings.......
