What is the reasoning for having TWO State champs in football, but not in Basketball or Volleyball? I mean if you go on enrollment numbers what is the differance?

I don't get it!!!!

Easy, the UIL says it's "for the kids", but actually it's "for the money" it generates..............................

Personally, I think the UIL has become a bunch of greedy control freaks...................

Its the UIL justification for having schools that are double the size of the smaller schools in that district. Just my opinion

For some reason, numbers don't seem to be nearly as big an issue in other sports as in football, so people don't bitch nearly as much about disparity in the classes.

I am guessing that the average attendance for 10 state football championships would be around 15,000 per event. So 150,000 total. Then $10 per person gives you $1,500,00 for the UIL to get a cut.

If there were 10 volleyball championships they might average 300 per game. So 3000 at $10 per is $30,000 for the UIL to raid.

Which one makes more sense?

Just as everyone said, its about MONEY. Just the same as why so many playoff teams? More playoff teams equals more playofff games. The UIL gets a cut from every playoff game in every sport. Nothing the UIL does is about being good for kids, its all about money for them. The UIL wants to do something for kids they can throw out the offseason rules about school coaches not being able to coach kids but during the season. How is it that NOT letting the kids be coached by qualified instructors good for the kids?????

the UIL does not have many ways to raise $ except football and the state hoops tourney ... if they didnt there would be no other UIL sponsored events - no baseball, softball, track, music, drama, etc. you think its just some old codgers getting rich? take a look at the various budgets, its all available and eye opening.

oh yeah, y'all would rather just play the "all about the $" card

OK I'm done ;)

Which one makes more sense? Have you ever been to a volleyball championship game. We had a 800-1000 fans at our bi-district game. and that was on our side alone.

Sorry, I never meant to say the UIL was getting rich, but are typical of many organizations (especially government or publicly funded); they grow and grow and grow

Why is it such a bad thing that the UIL gets money?

I would prefer the group governing Texas High School Sports to have plenty in the cofers over being cash strapped and poor.

Can you imagine having Regional & State tournaments for football? That would be some TIRED boys!

Volleyball, softball, basketball & baseball all need very good athletes to win. But none of them have positions where a large part of their requirement is to either knock the holy mess out of someone or keep someone from knocking the holy mess out of someone. :p

While it is not "all about the $", it certainly is a factor. The UIL has 57 employees - salaries alone total over $3.7 million per year (avg $65K+ per employee - not including benefits, retirement, etc.). The Exec Dir makes $215K, six fall in the $115-150K range, and there are ten more making $80-100K. I have not compared to other State agencies, but it seems pretty top-heavy to me.
