pivotal play at the end of the 2nd qtr....athens had scored, score was 31-14, they had momentum, pinned us back near our goal, 4th down we were punting from our endzone, snap went high, punter tipped it, it hit the ground, he picked it up and punted between 3 athens defenders who were in the process of crunching him, but somehow they didn't touch the ball, in fact while getting hit he still manages to put it almost 50 yds down the field....
the ref called roughing the kicker and you could read the athens coach's sign language, saying if the ball hits the ground and THEN he punts it, roughing can't be called......there didn't seem to be an argument on whether the athens boys tipped the ball (and i don't know how, cause they were tackling him and you see this foot poke out and kick the ball).....the coach's contention was about the ball hitting the ground before the kick nullifying the roughing call......
i don't know the correct call, but as a former qb my mind went to the fact that if the qb drops the ball then throws it and gets roughed, its still a valid roughing call......thats the only thing i knew to compare it to.....
the roughing call gave us a first down, the next play we completed a 50 yd pass to gilbert and, though we didn't score, athens really was starting to gain momentum before that and didnt get it back......
does anyone know the correct ruling.....or have an opinion?
