Wow, never thought I'd hear those words!! Lol. Yeah its too bad they broke up the rivalry, has been some great games over the years. Never know what the UIL will do we could all be back together and in Region I again next time!! Lol. Maybe yall will get it rolling again next year and we can meet up in the playoffs because I dont think we have ever met in the post season. Not sure if anyone will wanna meet up with us next year though because everyone except like 4-5 starters will return from this years team.

If no one has tried to answer...

Coldspring is between Shepherd and New Waverly (2a), and near Huntsville and Livingston (both 4a). Coldspring is a very small town, most a weekend community for those Houston folk that have a home on Lake Livingston.

You have not heard of Kirbyville? They were state ranked the entire season, and were state finalist in 2a the past two years. Athens (a big town 3a) does not have a great playoff history, but they played Chapel Hill to a 35-38 loss in the last district game. CS has had a tough road to get to this game.

To have Liberty Hill supporters on our side is a soothing thought, though I know a few of you who would wish otherwise (thats right...I'm talking to you LHPM!). We will give it our best, and I think we will win this game. But Coldspring is a seriously good team...I wish I had a more confident feeling, but I don't.

Love em or hate em....LH always played with class and dignity. And wow...were they something else at their peak in 06/07!!! Sure there were a few shots on the field that one would expect from any serious rivalry...but over all...they are a class organization. I look forward to the rivalry reigniting...next year!!!

Not much activity goin on this evening....guess its hard to get anything stirred up with only one Coldspring poster!! Lol. For some reason I'm not feeling as nervous about this game as others, I dont know if thats a good or bad sign. I just have alot of confidence in our guys and think that this matchup plays out into our favor. Trojandad said he was worried about a passing team and I think we can give them some trouble there if Lambert has time to get the pass off and I know that our D has been really good against the run and we should have the athletes to stop them enough to get the win. I just dont see a running team being able to keep up with our offense because our offense is a quick strike offense and we've faced some great defenses this season and no one has slowed us down yet. Just feels like everything is coming together for us at the right time.

I am always amused when someone assumes a running attack is not a "quick strike" offense. That is not always the case. The CS team that I saw Friday had a "quick strike" offense. It makes no difference how you get there. It is still 6 points.

Looks to be one heck of a game. But games at this level are supposed to be tough.

I agree the edge goes to Wimberley. This is the week I believe we come out firing on all cylinders. We have a tendency to really step up in the big games. Cuero, Sealy, Sweeny, and Navarro. If we can play physical and make the stops on defense, we should be able to score if we can play focused and eliminate the mistakes. It will be a fun night in Waco.

i am concerned about passing teams, for sure, but thats just because its an inferior phase in comparison to our rushing defense which has been lights out......

i keep giving our defensive backfield grief, but for the year we've allowed less than 100 yds/game rushing and passing.....

to me, tho, the best figure to show our defense for the year is that k'ville, outside of our two games with them, averaged over 51 points a game.....against us they put up 20 pts.....twice, first game of the year and their last....and they ARE a passing team.....

I just talked to someone close to one of the coaches (no names!) who toldme that Coldspring rarely punts (even if field position makes it prudent to do so) and goes for 2 points more times than not. TrojanDad?

they'll usually always punt deep in their end (obviously) but if its anywhere near mid field, anything less than 3 yds they usually go for, just have a lot of confidence in their line play that i spoke of.......

in our history, tho, we've never had a faithful field goal kicker, either for extra points or otherwise.....it just works out with our good line play to go for 2 most times since it works out better than our kicking rate when we're making over 50% of the 2 pointers....you'll notice in box score we kick a lot of extra points later in games, whether hit or miss, i think its barbay's way of not wanting to run up the score with 2 pters....

you were asking about things you didn't know about us.....one thing people talk about that see us for the first time is how quickly we start each play....when we break the huddle it's 2 seconds or so until everyone is set, then a second set and we're going....very little trying to draw someone offsides, just primarily "heere we are, lets go"....

occasionallywe'll get a zebra group that'll flag us a time or two for not being set long enough, but its a real rhythm to the offense....

Liberty Hill runs their offense the same way or they did when we played them before, they sprint to the line and hike it fast. Nelms will have them ready for it, shouldnt be something we havent gone against. I really wish today was friday!!!

We are pretty tight with this group of "zebras", so I suspect they will be breaking your rhythm on a regular basis...at least thats what they told me last night at Hooters.

i'd be more concerned if you took them to a better place.....taking them to hooters might play to OUR advantage......lol

i understand coach has had success with this quick count, but i SURE didn't do it back when i played....i LOVED getting the d to jump offsides.....would threaten my team within an inch of their lives if they jumped......used to bring new jokes to the huddle to get their attention for what i'd do to them, anything to get their attention above the normal calls of the game.....

Help me out Wimberley folk. I was reading this today from the Statesman chat site in regards to "Coach of the Year".

Danny Davis: If I were to vote now, I'd give it to Wimberley's Nelms. Wimberley is 14-0 despite having its best player hurt/suspended. The Texans also didn't have their best all-around threat gone for the first eight games and they just got their best defensive player back from an ACL injury.

Did I miss something or did we just get back who I think he's talking about? I thought he was lost for the season, period.

On the offense he must be keyed by the D.

That is quite an accomplishment. Congratulations!!!! My son is in from West Virginia and he will also be attending. He is real close to Coach Nelms and had a chance to visit with he and Coach Smith yesterday. They had a great visit, and he was able to get the inside scoop on the game.

coldspring has just had so many athletes of phenomenol stature that, before barbay, had such little support to go further, to attend college, to spread their wings.....some had parents that were from the old school of "college was too good for me and it's too good for you" that had no support at school in administations past to get past that.....

i assimilate so much with that as i came from that type of home and lost family relationships just from simply going to college and "offending" their thoughts on it....if not for one man, a businessman in my town, taking it on himself to see i received the support i needed, i wouldnt have made it.....i owe him so much of what i am today, so paying it forward is one of those things that just isn't even an option....

my oldest son of whom i spoke not only had an incredible time playing def end, but took it on himself during those years to make sure some teammates less fortunate than him had a chance to succeed.....at his request and research, we had several young men who, at the time, were living in crack houses, disowned by family, coming to live with us in a protected home....they did without a lot at the expense to help when they could have just been selfish teenagers (him and his younger brother)....

so yea, everyone in coldspring thinks they know why i'm proud of him when they see his portrait on the wall, but my respect and admiration is there if he had not played a down.....:D

my oldest son of whom i spoke not only had an incredible time playing def end, but took it on himself during those years to make sure some teammates less fortunate than him had a chance to succeed.....at his request and research, we had several young men who, at the time, were living in crack houses, disowned by family, coming to live with us in a protected home....they did without a lot at the expense to help when they could have just been selfish teenagers (him and his younger brother)....

so yea, everyone in coldspring thinks they know why i'm proud of him when they see his portrait on the wall, but my respect and admiration is there if he had not played a down.....:D

I was gonna make some attempt at humor regarding the Massey prediction...but then read this. It stopped me in my tracks. You should be one proud father, sir. I salute you!

guidance is great and so needed, but (i promised him secrecy years ago so he has to be nameless) took it on himself with my father and mother divorcing at the time, to make sure my mom's mortgage payment got paid each month while making it look like it came from me while i got my schooling.....all the years i was in undergrad and grad school i supplied him passing grades (most of the time, lol) and he'd re-up his involvement.....

i don't have a clue why he did it, he owed me or my family nothing and my mom passed away in a paid off house years later without a clue (until she got to the next life, i guess) who paid her notes many of those years while i was at school, his only conditions were i made passing grades and never reveal it was him doing this....

its 35 years later and just typing this is just crazy to wrap my mind around....i won the lottery the day our lives crossed paths, no doubt about it....

Go Trojans!

Win this one for my former coworker. She will be very thrilled to see the Trojans win. I just spoke with her today and she tells me that she is so nervous that she is not going to eat on Friday.

Anyways, safe traveling to and from Waco. And may both teams play an injury free game.

i keep giving our defensive backfield grief, but for the year we've allowed less than 100 yds/game rushing and passing.....

to me, tho, the best figure to show our defense for the year is that k'ville, outside of our two games with them, averaged over 51 points a game.....against us they put up 20 pts.....twice, first game of the year and their last....and they ARE a passing team.....

I think the Texans offense vs the Trojan defense will be the key to the game. The Texans have a potent and diverse offense that has fared well against some good teams. However, it appears the Trojans have a very, very athletic defense and that gives me some pause. I will say that Sweeny appeared to have a pretty athletic front 7 in the early going but they succumbed to the pressure. Of course they did not have the resume that Coldspring possesses so we will see. If the Trojans are indeed dominating on defense...it could be tough sledding as the Texans are certainly a scrappy defense but they will give up some points here and there. Execute...execute...execute!!!! Go Texans!

I think it will come down to the team that makes the fewest mistakes. I know that is a cliche, but at this level of play that is usually true. The teams appear to be very closely matched.

i just read that your qb is the one guy left off your 2005 team......very big feather in your hat there.....thats the one spot i'd want that kind of experience....

you wanted a good idea about our scheme, i was just watchin the pony express (james and dickerson) and that is the same type of scheme, obviously not to that degree.....gilbert is the back that could have a scheme fashioned around him like dickerson, his speed is that good.....cummings runs hard and does the "up the middle" work buy he doesnt have the fullback frame, like james didnt, james had enough speed to break one off, he just wasnt the speed back of the two.....

i can understand how hearing someone primarily runsthat you would think "its just smashmouth" but, as jdog said, were as close to a passing team while handing it off.....barbay works during the game to set up plays, teams puy 9 in the box and get beat to the corner....or start cheating outside and cummings pops it......his calls try to just set up plays where its 4 on 4, 5 on 5 on one side of the field or the other and then take our chances.....its much more of a wide open offense than it would seem unseen.....

i agree with sportshack, the tell on the whole game will be you guys offense and our defense......

I think it all depends on how this game goes, if we are in control I dont think he'll play much because Nelms probably wont want to mess up our rhythm, but if its a dog fight, which I'm expecting it to be, I think he'll have to get him on the field because he is no doubt our best player and you'll have to see if him being in can make an impact and change the game. I would have to imagine him being in good enough shape to play 15-20 snaps this game both offense and defense combined, even if he only gets 5 carries on offense he has a chance to break one any time he touches it. There is no tomorrow if we lose so if we need him we will have to play him as much as he can go as long as its at a high level, cant try to wait til next week to see if he's back to game shape.

He is back this week for the first time in 9 or 10 weeks. A JV player stepped into his role (Wilson), and has been FANTASTIC, actually better suited for our spread type offense (Dennis Smith is a VERY strong runner, but a downhill runner, he will knock you down and run right over your body...not always the best fit for a spread). But if he does have an impact tonight...it will be on defense, where he is a punishing OLB, and few people can outrun him in 3A. I kind of think he wont see much action tonight...but could be wrong.

wimberley's defense showed up tonight, was similar to k'ville's def effort against us.....we just broke enough long runs to stay in front.....holding wimberley to that score was a great effort.....i lost count of the number of sacks, wasn't expecting that.....

I will do a game analysis on a different post, but I wanted to say clearly and without excuse or ambiguity...Coldspring was the better team. As usual (this deep in the play offs), our opponent tonight was bigger, faster and stronger. We knew this going in. But what I didnt expect was the discipline. They are DEFINITELY disciplined. They are well coached, obviously. My hat is off to them, and I give them the "nod of respect" as you do when when you meet your match. Good job, Coldspring...and you are my choice for next weeks Championship!

Wimberley could never get rolling on offense; went for the deep pass way too many times, and then could never establish the run game. Was impressed with our defensive effort. We really played lights out and holding Coldsprings to 6 points in second half proves just how hard they played. Coldsprings made the big plays on offense (especially Gilbert) and we didn't. Kudos to Coldsprings, they have a lot of team speed and have hit their stride. Now take care of business next Friday and good luck against Carthage.

12-11-2010, 02:15 AM
You know guys. I would love to blame the loss on our team having an off night or some bad calls by the refs. No, not this game. My hats off to the Coldspring defense. They played with great intensity. Pressured our QB all night and shut down our running game. That RB (#1) is something special. He was the real difference. They were the better team tonight. Congrats. Good luck next week against Carthage.

wimbo_pro
12-11-2010, 02:26 AM
Yep...we did what we needed to do defensively...they only scored 26 points. And only 6 the 2nd half!! We just couldnt get going offensively. Obviously Coldspring had a lot to do with that (how many sacks?)...but we were not in best form tonight on offense. You can't play like that at this level. Coldspring did. They are the better team, pure and simple. We will be tough next year...but learned something tonight. Good luck Coldspring!

you guys have been top rung all week....would have liked to have seen smith in his top form, but i'm sure i'll see him in aggie land...i'm sorry i couldnt make it down at half, my oldest son wasnt able to make it but several of our other "sons" showed up right before half and a couple had new babies and i just didnt have the heart to leave....

i've been saying since the 2nd k'ville game i believe gilbert has become a first team all state candidate and i still think that....if that guy puts on 25 pounds like his brother and keeps his speed i can't imagine what he'd become....and cummings is approaching ray fishers one season mark of over 2700 yds back in 92 for us....

def coordinator really has those guys on an edge, thats a big difference from the crockett game mentioned earlier....i was amazed at the rushing total you guys had, i expected more than that....

i just KNEW your coach was calling the screen play on that last 4th down effort that y'all scored on the earlier possession, it sure looked like it was there....anyway, thanks for the props and we'll see what happens next week.....any thoughts on whether we'll be the underdog again from mr "oakhurst"? lol

Yeah, your defense shut us down! We couldnt get around the corner either...too much speed on your part. Smith was a total non-factor, as predicted by some. Our coaching staff did a great job. They stopped the bleeding, and put the offense in position to make a comeback. But we just didnt execute. Dropped passes, fumbles, errant throws, penalties...cant win that way. But thats ok...you guys beat us fair and square.

No doubt you will be the underdog. But take it to them!!!

Dominate performance by CS, yalls D came to play and completely shut us down, hats off to yall and good luck at state. We got outcoached tonite, doesnt happen often but it did tonight. The coaches had no clue what to do on O and just resorted to chunking it deep everytime and it wasnt working out at all, just terrible playcalling everyone looked lost once we got down. Other than the long runs the D played lights out but theres only so much you can do when your on the field all the time because your O isnt helping out. I dont have a clue why Dennis wasnt in the game on offense, we're down 2 scores and nothing else was working so you have to put him in to see if he can make a play. Dont understand why you'd reinstate him and play him on D but then not use him on offense, if your gonna play him then play him to his full potential or dont play him at all , I dont agree with that at all. Hes our best athlete and he's standing on the sideline when he's already been in throughout the game and our offense hasnt done anything all night. I dont know, just some really weird coaching decisions and we looked out of sync.

Disagree...TOTALLY disagree. Our coaching staff was able to stop the bleeding, holding them to 6 points in the 2nd half. Then, despite the sputtering, we were right there to be within one score, but dropped a pass in the end zone. Then, over threw one in the end zone. Then, fumbled a kick off. The coaching staff put us in a position to WIN...we just didnt execute when it was most crucial. The Smith thing? I dunno...he didnt look to be all there last night. Like he wasnt part of the team. Disappointing...very disappointing. He didnt join the team when they came out at the beginning and were jumping on each other...he didnt join them on the sidelines, he didnt join them as they gathered to rally. Dont blame the coaches for that, I say.

Yea like I said our D played lights out, the offense and the offensive calls were terrible and they never made any adjustments to stop the pressure. Have no idea why they did not go to our 2 back shotgun and leave help in the backfield to stop the outside rush, especially #20 if our plan was to throw the ball. We just looked sloppy and confused on offense all night and there's no way anyone can disagree with how terrible that looked. It looked like we had 10 plays that we ran over and over and when they didnt work we just sent everyone deep hoping for something to happen. Our receivers were dead tired, especially Blakemore and I think it was a bad coaching call to leave him in on the kickoff he fumbled because you could tell he was exhausted. I agree with you on Smith not looking a part of the team because he didnt but when he went in he played hard and I just think they shouldve put him in on offense and tried to throw him the ball deep. They had him in on defense and a few plays on offense in the first half so why not give him a chance in the 2nd half, if you werent gonna use him then you shouldve kept him suspended or just in street clothes this week. My guess would be that was the last time we've prob seen him in a Texan uniform, hope not but I've got a feeling he wont be here next year.

Smith was the only Texan with enough speed to chase down Gilbert. He came from across the field and caught him from behind once but it was obvious he wasn't in game shape.

Agreed with this. Coldspring's D was the best we've played against in quite a while. Shut down the run completely, pressured the passer relentlessly, and had an athletic secondary that made plays. Great defense.

Gilbert's just a blazer, too.

Congrats on the well-deserved win.

Agreed with this. Coldspring's D was the best we've played against in quite a while. Shut down the run completely, pressured the passer relentlessly, and had an athletic secondary that made plays. Great defense.

Gilbert's just a blazer, too.

Congrats on the well-deserved win.

BTW, #65 -- what's his name, and who is recruiting him?

matt wilson, 6'7", 270....he's listed and has been known as going to houston for a long time, but a former coach that lives in coldspring told me last night that he had heard he was changing his mind, that tcu was how he was leaning even though major applewhite paid him a visit during a previous game....

I think the refs were quite generous in not calling more.:D

LOL!! It is nice...and I liked the way you guys ran through the tunnel...lined up along the back of the end zone, then single filed through the tunnel. Nice. And I notice one other thing. All your boys...ALL OF THEM..had their hand on their heart through the national anthem. That impressed me.
