my nurse is from caldwell, and she and i have been talking football recently, and she told me that caldwell had been to the state championship game once but lost to cuero......i don't know if she has her history right but it made me think, that is the same boat coldspring is in, one trip to the big dance with a loss to show for it.....

rather than bug wos87 (cause i KNOW he's swamped ) i thought i'd ask how many teams have made it to the final dance (and how many times) only to come home empty....

Brownwood has won 7. I know we've played in either 8 or 9.

that HAD to hurt....

our trip in 92 against southlake carroll (pre dodge) had a blinding storm that delayed the game for hours, they actually called the game, put the boys on the bus to the hotel, then called the bus back to play it when the weather let up....the game started at close to 11 pm.....we never got on track, our 2700 yd rusher slipped and slided to 50 yards total and we went home at 2 am losers 48 - 0.......:weeping: :bigcry: :(

Denison played LaMarque and lost 3 straight (95-97)

Refugio won in '68, '70, and '82 I believe. Not sure if there were other years...

I thought it was just twice, once in 2A and once in 3A. Not sure though.

About 1/2 of them. :)

Unless you consider a tie coming home empty. If yes, then just over 1/2.

P.S. Dawgs are 2-1 lost in 1991 (4A).

But what a great game is was! It is so hard to get to that point. No matter how good a team is, you need some luck along the way. A lot of "better teams" go home early. We were 3rd in our district that year, and won two playoff games and the SC by 3 points.

Navasota has made it to the semis twice, and lost to SLC in the 1988 3A state final, 42-8. Seems losing to SLC in December is a common theme across the state.:(

Burnet, Smithson Valley and Elysian Fields are 0-3 in State Championship games.... they hold the current record for most times being bridesmaids, never the bride. I believe Temple lost 5 State Finals before they finally won their first championship in 1979.

Caldwell has NEVER been in a state championship game. They lost to Cuero in the Area round in 1994, which is the game she must have been thinking of.

WO-S lost one Final in 1988... and it was a major upset to Paris.

I NEED to update this.... the following are all playoff qualifiers from 1920-2007 and how many times each program LOST in each round. The 1-time state final losers would be all the schools with 0 and 1 in their first two columns, surrounding Coldspring (#274) actually. Teams ranked from #203 through #318 all made it to state finals and have never won one. Again, this is only through 2007 so the table has changed over the past 3 seasons.

The 1146 Programs ever to qualify for the UIL State Football Playoffs (1920-2007)

Columns: Rank/Year of 1st playoff appearance/Program/Championships/Losses in state finals/Losses in semifinals/Losses in quarterfinals/Losses in rnd of 16/Losses in rnd of 32/Losses in rnd of 64

Points are calculated by the following formula: State title = 64 pts, Loss in final=32 pts, Loss in semifinal=16 pts, Loss in quarterfinals=8 pts, Loss in rnd of 16=4 pts, Loss in rnd of 32=2 pts,Loss in rnd of 64=1 pt.

That's what I have too... where is the discrepancy?

In 1964 Coldspring was in Class B and Class B teams only were allowed to play 2 playoff games with a resulting 16 Regional Champs Statewide. Since Coldspring lost in the regional finals, that loss to Danbury is counted as a loss in the Round of 32.

The above table is dependent on how many teams were in your specific playoff bracket in any specific year. Thus D1 teams in a 32-team playoff bracket who lost a Bi-District game are listed in the "Lost in rd of 32" column...

From 1951-1955 in the largest classification there were only 8 districts so if you made the playoffs you automatically made the Quarterfinals. So a first round lost would be counted in the Quarterfinal column.

Denison won in 1984(4a) and beat Tomball.

But losing 3 in a row is earns bridesmaid status.

That year SC blew out all their opponents..Think your game was one of the closest ones.SC had no business in 3A that year..Thats makes the loss even worse..Never know you wouldve won it all if it wasnt for SC making a stop in 3a..
