Did I read this right?

Longview (9-4) advances to play Mesquite Horn (9-4) in the Class 5A Division II Region II final at 6 p.m. next Saturday at Independence Stadium in Shreveport, La.

I bet some nice TEXAS town, with a stadium suited for this game, would love the money being generated from this game.

This don't even sound right. Does it?

As a Texas tax payer, this don't seem the right thing to do by the UIL.

As I said on another thread, Horn and Longview flipped home-home neutral with Horn picking SMU's Ford Stadium and Longview picking the Indy Bowl.

Obviously, Longview won the toss. The only place in between the two to play would have been Rose Stadium in Tyler but it's way too small to fit either of these teams enormous fan bases.

I heard Kincaide Stadium in Dallas as a possible destination but one of the two teams didn't want to do it.

What's wrong with the stadium's in Waco, Huntsville, San Jac Stadium? Least we are supporting our own state ecomomy.

You think UIL really approved this site for a TEXAS HIGH SCHOOL playoff game? Must say, this don't seem right to our Texas citizens and the money a community could make hosting this game.

This happens every once in awhile. I have seen El Paso meet Midland/Odessa/Amarillo schools in New Mexico for football/baseball playoffs sometimes.

Best thing about going to Shreveport for the game is that you can hit up the boats before or after.

UIL should rather see ya "hit up" the Texas Taco Bells, Wendy's, McD's, Hilton's, Motel 8's with your spending money, instead of spending it in Louisana.

UIL doesn't care about anyone's pockets but their own, they get the same cut no matter where the game is played..

why should the uil care about where texans spend their money...our own state government...doesn't care that texans spend their money on the casino's in oklahoma and louisiana.

i once had to go scout a playoff game...LCM and Jasper in Louisiana.....got all the way to natchitoches and the intersection of the stadium....when we got the call to come back home...we had lost earlier in day to kilgore...........five hour trip had a great dinner at nice resturant on the lake there.

spoke with a coaching buddy about the trip...who's dad was an adminstrator at LCM....he told me the game got started late cause with all the arguing about sites...both schools forgot to get officials.

The thing that stands out to me is the fact that mesquite people have a much further drive than longview folks.

This is the second East Texas Team that has the Metroplex team whining 'cause they are having to play outside the area....Argyle drives to Tyler.

Not sure anyone is whining. I was the one that brought this thread up, and I don't follow either team in this matchup.

When planning my weekend plans, and looking where I'll be traveling, I noticed a Texas playoff game being played in Louisana. Found it odd, not right---and was wondering why they don't play it in Waco, Huntsville---somewhere equal in driving distance and in the same state conducting these playoffs.

BTW: I'll be spending Friday/Sat in San Antonio. Some good matchups there.

Easy there...Horn is not complaining. They will be ready to play even if the game is being played on the far side of the moon.

Horn has been traveling out to Tyler and Longview for 6 years now...what's 45 extra minutes?

That reminds me of a non district baseball game Odem played against Mathis a few years ago in Odem. Sinton wasn't playing so I made the trip to Odem to watch it since both teams were good. We kept waiting for the game to start but they were waiting for the umpires. Then it was said they made a mistake and went to Mathis. :)
It gets even better we waited for them to show up but they never did. Finally the announcer said the game was postponed till the weekend. I couldn't go but they were nice enough to refund me the money. I haven't gone to a game over there since.

You do realize the UIL had absolutely nothing to do with where this game was being played?

If you want to cry about Texas money going out of state, you ought to get on the "horn" (pardon the Mesquite pun) to your legislators and give them an earful about our insane laws.

We could have all those casino boats docked on Lake O' the Pines rather than in Shreveport if it weren't for our lawmakers' unwillingness to legalize more gambling.

I guess because we have such a huge surplus in the state Treasury, such revenue-raising measures aren't needed. < /sarcasm>

The one thing I don't like about this state is its default position as a "police state." We spout the "freedom" rhetoric, but our laws don't put it into practice. Just ask Willie Nelson.

(Just now noticed NastySlot's excellent comment, but the sentiment he expressed bears repeating.)

You should have asked for gas money also after making a trip all the way to Odem.

Why Mesquite Horn, Longview are playing at Independence Stadium in Shreveport
Posted at 3:55 PM on Mon., Nov. 29, 2010

A lot of people are buzzing about the Mesquite Horn - Longview matchup in the Class 5A Division II Region II finals.

But the buzz isn't all about the game, a rematch of an Oct. 15 District 11-5A game that Longview won, 13-8, on a late fourth-quarter touchdown and key defensive stop.

A good bit of the buzz is where it's being played: 6 p.m. Saturday at the Shreveport (La.) Independence Stadium (glibly called on the city's Web site as "Home of the most celebrated bowl game in Northern Louisiana;" Indeed.).

I'll have a story about the site selection process on Thursday for those interested, including a bit on this game.

But here's the synopsis of why two Texas high schools are playing in Louisiana. Mesquite Horn and Longview couldn't agree on a neutral site. There was some talk from the Longview camp to actually play the game in Dallas at Kincaide Stadium, just a quick jaunt (20 miles) from Horn.

But Horn declined to use that as a neutral site. Seems that Horn felt that Longview was a bit too comfortable in that stadium. "Lobo West" is what some of the Longview fans were calling Kincaide, since Longview has had won big games in that stadium over the past few seasons, including beating Denton Guyer in the 4A Division I semifinals last season.

Tyler's Rose Stadium was also deemed unacceptable, with older and less-comfortable facilities, especially for the visiting side.

So, the teams decided to flip (more correctly, zip code pick; more on that on Thursday) for home-neutral sites. Horn chose SMU's Ford Stadium, and Longview chose Independence Stadium, which was within their rights to do. Horn lost, and now faces a 344-mile round trip.

It is not against any UIL rule to choose a stadium outside of the state to use as a home-neutral location. The only stipulation at play would be that the site must be allowed to accommodate the fans from both schools (the Highland Park rule). Independence Stadium holds 53,000.

It's not unprecedented that a Dallas/Fort Worth-area team will play a big playoff game in that stadium. Highland Park, led by then QB Matt Stafford, faced Texarkana Texas High, led by then QB Ryan Mallett, in a Class 4A Division I area game in Shreveport in 2006.

Schools from the Panhandle have played El Paso-area schools in Hobbs, New Mexico and Jasper and Little Cypress-Mauriceville played in Natchitoches, La.
