Maybe I'll post a few tonight to have something worthy. In the meantime, maybe the real guys will speak up.

That will be the only #8 he will be hitting, because Brownwood's #8 Shipley will be running circles around the Lobo defence.

I really don't care who wins. I just want to see an epic game. But this is how I see it.

If Brownwood is winning by 21 at the start of the 4th quarter then the game is over and I'm

Just watched Brownwood highlights and brief interviews with Coach Shipley and Levi Perez

Preparing for the Quarterfinals 1978!

Brownwood Bulletin, 11/28/1978
AAA QUARTERFINAL
CROSBY NEXT FOR BHS
The opponents are new, but it’s the same old song and dance as far as the playoff sites are concerned as the Brownwood Lions continue their drive for a hoped-for-state Class AAA football championship.
Last week, Coach Gordon Wood’s Lions got by bi-district foe Belton 20-0 in the first meeting between the two schools since 1962. But it was Brownwood’s fourth playoff appearance in Waco’s Baylor Stadium, scene of the Lions’ 34-16 state championship victory over West Columbia.
This Saturday, it’s back to Memorial Stadium in Austin where the Lions won state titles in 1960-67-70 before losing to Dickinson in the last year’s state title game. The opponent in the 6 pm quarterfinal joust will be Crosby, 10-1-1 on the year and 20-7 bi-district winner over Houston King. But the Cougars’ biggest claim to fame was their 16-10 victory over then top-ranked Beaumont Hebert in a zone playoff for the District 9-AAA championship.
The Brownwood-Crosby winner will meet either Bay City or Gregory-Portland in next week’s semifinals.
In other playoff action this week, San Saba, a 7-6 bi-district winner over Junction will play powerful China Spring in a Class A regional contest Friday at pm in Brownwood’s Cen-Tex Stadium.
The high and the mighty will meet head on this week when defending state champion Plano collides with top-ranked Temple at Texas Stadium in Irving.

All that hype in 2008 came with Kenny Vacarro at Strong Safety. He left after our first scrimmage. And if you don't think he is a player, you are kidding yourself. He would have made a huge difference in our secondary. When he left, it caused a chain reaction through our defense. Players having to learn new positions to cover for it. It cost us dearly. Either way, we moved down and showed you 3A's what the spread was about. That's for sure. Just couldn't stop nobody. And that is very rare for a Brownwood defense.

Also, remember that Shipley brought his son. He didn't bring the majority of our players who make up the TEAM. Jaxon and his dad will be the first to say Brownwood is loaded with talent.

And all that crap about the light coming on is you and your wishful thinking. It will definitely be to our advantage if we play Carthage or Argyle after the war they are about to be in.

We haven't just whizzed through. We have blown through like an F5 Tornado. Celina whizzed through like a West Texas Dirt Devil...Lucas Lovejoy was a pretty good team. Henderson exposed them. ouch.

Try 4 State Championships in this Decade. 7 Since 1995. That's 7 since Brownwood won one. Your lucky season won't carry Celina's water. You were Lucky Bob Shipley came along with his son. You are Lucky this safety didn't go to Early too. Lot's of luck in your current year put all the kids together that fit Bob Shipley's coaching style. Still gonna have to be real lucky to win it all even if everyone stays healthy.

But next year you could be 3-7 again............. Back to mediocrity for another 30 years.

Henderson exposed them. ouch.

This article's story is about the 1978 version of a Chastain and we have a great one this year too, so tremble Monahans!

BLOCKED PUNT INSURES BROWNWOOD WIN
By Bill Hart, Sports Writer – Brownwood Bulletin
AUSTIN—Kirk Chastain had never blocked a punt in his career, so far as the Brownwood Lions were concerned; his first couldn’t have come at a better time.
Brownwood was leading 21-14, with just over six minutes to play and both the Lions and Crosby had three penetrations each at the time.
However, the 165 pound junior defensive end broke through to block Tiger Blomstrom’s punt and the Lions drove in for an insurance touchdown and a 28-14 win over Crosby in a Class AAA quarterfinals contest Saturday at Memorial Stadium before 12,000 fans.
The No. 1 ranked Lions spotted Crosby a touchdown and an extra penetration in the first quarter, then stormed back for three second quarter touchdowns, all into a stiff breeze, to assume a 21-7 halftime lead.
But Crosby battled back, thanks to an interception, and kept the heat on the Lions until Chastain did his thing.
“We didn’t have the rush on, we were set up for the return, but when I saw the high snap, I felt I could block it,” Chastain said. “I just barely caught it with my right hand and – and I had no idea where it (the ball) went. Then I saw Jeff Walker running with it and I knew we had it.”
Walker ran to the Crosby 15 and four plays later Glen Coles ran three yards for his second touchdown of the night with 4:26 remaining.
The win sends the Lions, 13-0 on the season, into the semifinals next week against Bay City, 28-27 winner over Gregory-Portland, here at Memorial Stadium at 6 pm Saturday……..

Who is currently in mediocrity tonight? It sure ain't Brownwood...

Oh the good ol' days.... :) When the name Celina meant winning. Now it means, Kenny Chesney and under achievers...which I am sure is about to stretch out into the next 2 decades...at least. Isn't it sad that the highlight of your season was when Kenny Chesney came to your pep rally? HAHAHHA wow....ouch.

Celina was chest thumping about beating Sanger. LOL Then got beat by LL. I mean blanked by LL...

I agree...

L48 is among a group of faithful Brownwood posters who have really taken a beating on this board over the last 3 years. Did they deserve it? Sometimes yes...and for SOME of them, A LOT of times they deserved it and much more.

BUT...

They have stuck around and taken their medicine and never wavered in their support of their school and team. I am glad they are getting to experience what this special group of young men has given them this season.

You have mentioned Dallas Huston several times and I agree with you. Dallas has been doing it a long time and when you listen to him on the radio you know who he is cheering for but he seems to call it like it is with a very slight homer view.

Very true! Things would not click if it wasn't for the OL and DL... Especially from a Celina type of team. But if you get too focused on the middle of the field with Brownwood, you might miss the best part. It happens so fast!

Now that would have been a heck of a 3 games right there. Good Football, gota love it. I hate friggin blowouts. The game we lost to Lovejoy was 3-0 until 6 minutes to go. It sounds boring but it was far from it to me. Spread teams are exciting if they are clicking like Brownwood appears to be but if a stout D ever hampers that spread by rattlin the QB, they need a running game and it appears Brownwood has that covered too. The question is can you stop a Wing T or a Slot T that is well executed. Your defense the next 3 games will need to win the Championship for you IMO.

I really don't care who wins this game, one way or another...whoever does has my support from here on out though.

I am with you, I hate blowouts. I would LOVE to see a good close game.

Good post. Jaxon is one of Brownwood's best defensive players. Just him being able to stand back and await the punt disrupts teams so much they give Brownwood very favorable field position if he doesn't even get the ball.

Beginning of the season, I had lots of questions about our defense, but we scored so many points so quickly, it was a moot point. The defense has vastly improved with the proof in the Bridgeport game. The Bulls had a very decent offense and was contained handily by the D. Yes we gave up yards, but shut them down when it mattered. Not the overall shut down defense of previous champions I have seen, but efficient. And you know about our offense, second to none! Let us finish our business this year before we tackle 2011.

Good luck to both teams. Dont really have a dog in this fight seeing we have our own dogfight going on tonight as well. Of course, who wouldnt like to see the underdog do well and beat Goliath?...its natural for neutral parties to make that choice. And of course, many here would love to jab Rocket if they lose (ya know I'm right!). But honestly, I say Brownwood <bows head> is just too darned strong in too many positions and categories...they will overwhelm the Loboes. Joel A. says: Battle of philosophies highlights Monahans-Brownwood matchup
Comments 0
December 02, 2010 10:47 PM
BY JOEL A. ERICKSON
A clash of styles has been set for the Class 3A Division II playoffs tonight.

Lined up on one sideline is Monahans, a traditional Wing-T offense, a team built to pound the ball down a defense’s throat, eat clock and eliminate scoring opportunities for the other team.

Lined up on the other sideline is Brownwood, a true spread offense, a lightning-fast explosion of an attack that really doesn’t need more than two minutes to score. The Lions do not care how many times the opponent touches the ball.

All Brownwood wants is another chance to get its offense back on the field.

The Wing-T represents tradition. At the turn of the century, the spread represented an innovation by a few select programs, but so many teams have copied the offense that it’s almost become the official base formation of amateur football.

High schools across the state use the spread. All four Big 12 universities — Texas, Texas Tech, Texas A&M, Baylor — in the state run some form of the offense.

And to all the people who say the NFL doesn’t use the spread, that notion is ridiculous. Watch the Saints or the Colts or the Packers or the Patriots on any given Sunday. When those teams spread four or five receivers across the field and start throwing bubble screens, you’re watching the spread.

So the spread is no longer a novelty. It has become the norm.

And Monahans’ ground-and-pound style is not just a nod to an era that has already passed. When the right team is handing off the ball, a punishing running attack is just as effective as it ever was.

Ask the Loboes, who hold the same unblemished 13-0 record as the No. 1-ranked Lions. Ask Euless Trinity and Coppell, the Class 5A Division I state quarterfinalists that have rolled up 4,742 and 2,792 rushing yards this season, respectively.

Talk to the Wisconsin Badgers, a team that never met a fullback it didn’t like, sitting at 11-1 and ranked No. 5. Or even the nation’s three remaining undefeated teams at the top of every poll in America.

Oregon, Auburn and TCU rank fifth, sixth and ninth in the nation in rushing offense this season.

Turns out that the traditional approach has also become the new fad, the novelty attack that is taking football by storm. UCLA knocked off formerly mighty Texas this season using the Pistol formation, a scheme designed to keep the ball on the ground at all costs.

And who can blame any of these teams?

Defenses have gotten smaller, faster and more mobile in the last decade to keep up with the spread. Sometimes, the best way to beat a defense like that is to run right over it.

So Monahans and Brownwood is not a clash between the old and the new, between tradition and innovation.

Tonight’s game is simply a clash between power and speed.

A battle that should be a heck of a lot of fun to watch.

A clash of styles has been set for the Class 3A Division II playoffs tonight.

So Monahans and Brownwood is not a clash between the old and the new, between tradition and innovation.

Tonight’s game is simply a clash between power and speed.

A battle that should be a heck of a lot of fun to watch.

Link (http://varsity.oaoa.com/articles/monahans-7380-oavarsity-down-tonight.html)

Great article!

I agree with 2 of the 3 things he says at the end.
1. It is between tradition and innovation.
2. It will be a heck of a lot of fun to watch.

But, clash between power and speed? Not as simple as that.;) People will find out that Brownwood has all of the above! Lots of power to go with that speed. That's why this game has the potential to get out of hand by half time. It's one thing to have 1 of the 2, but if you have both... you get Brownwood. :D

Guess we did learn a little geography and spelling, but alas, tonight we will learn some math! Better bring your calculators Monahans cause you will run out of fingers and toes!

Well me and Hollywood found out that we may be distant relatives!!!

Oh wait.....that wasn't on this thread!!

You can guarantee that Brownwood is going to be firing on all cylinders Friday night. Chastain will be back (hasn't played a full game since Sweetwater). You also have to know that the Brownwood coaches will have a bag full of never before seen tricks for good ol' Monahans. Brownwood can stop the run. And I think we have some great coaches still hanging around from the Wood era that know a little about the Wing T. I would put Monahans on the same level as Snyder. If Snyder was 100%, they would have won.

Brownwood rolls.

49-24

Rocket is on target with this. Just a reminder.

Well, it's been a fun week. The countdown has begun. A little less than nine hours from now, we'll see which 13-0 team from Reg. 1 advances to meet a team from East Texas. Everyone have a safe trip (and wear maroon). :p

Let me begin by saying that I believe that Brownwood will win this game and very well could win big. However, I have seen Coach Owens get miraculous effort and execution out of his players in the past. If the game is close, and it comes down to the 4th quarter (which I don't expect) then I would give the edge to the Loboes. It will take a monumental effort by Monahans and mistakes by Brownwood for the Loboes to win....not likely....but possible which is what makes high school football so great this time of year.

good luck to both teams.

Monahans is good each and every year but i just don't think they will have enough to defeat brownwood.

will this game be broadcast online anywhere?

I like this except for not giving Monahans the win. ;) The Loboes won't roll over and give up. They will fight till the very end which makes this game so interesting. Monahans is outmatched but if they can play fundamental football and keep the mistakes to a minimum there is a chance they can pull out a win. Us Monahans fans keep talking bout heart because frankly that is all we have on Brownwood.

Well, I can name some other things.......
1. the Home side is bigger than the Visitor
2. you do have a 50/50 shot at the coin flip(don't give up on this one)
3. A misspelled mascot
4. Tumble weeds
5. A green Santa (but we do have Santa in a plane pulling a Lion flag so this might be a PUSH)

I'm sure I can name some others but don't want to do all the work for you :D :D :D

In all honestly, I wish you all the best intentions and it has been a fun week of banter. Be safe and have fun.

For those at the M&G I'll see ya there
