The shirt will be a draw, too, and folks can look for it to know where everyone is gathered up. Brownwood's Mama is from Central Texas not East Texas. Just because you're further East than we are doesn't make you from East Texas. That would be like me telling someone from El Paso that Monahans is in East Texas.

This was in the Odessa American

Ben Maki says: There are some common ties in matchup between Monahans, Brownwood
November 30, 2010 7:04 PM

You can bet several West Texas coaches will be at San Angelo Stadium at 7 p.m. Friday when No. 1 Brownwood and No. 8 Monahans match up in a Class 3A Division I state quarterfinal.

Instead of spending this space on coach-speak from the coaches involved (Joel will have plenty of that throughout the week), I talked to coaches whose teams have played against both teams to try to get a different perspective on the game.

Some were more forthcoming than others, which is to be expected, but their responses were enlightening.

The coaches reached a consensus on a few issues.

>> Brownood’s Jaxon Shipley is dangerous, but there are five other skill players on that team who can score quickly.

“They have multiple weapons offensively,” Borger head coach Rusty Purser said. “It’s a real challenge. I felt like going in we had to focus one area really hard and that was their passing game. They ended up having 180-some yards rushing against us.”

>> Monahans might be the one team that can slow down the Lions. (More on this in a minute).

>> Brownwood has a lot of team speed.

“Brownwood is as explosive of a team on offense I’ve seen in 25 years in 2A, 3A, 4A,” Big Spring head coach Phillip Ritchey said. “Everybody touches the ball has a ton of speed. Defensively, it’s the same way.”

>> Monahans shows a lot of tenacity on defense.

“Every one of those kids was just getting after us,” Purser said. “A big part of what slowed us down was their tackles and linebackers. They were just getting to us the whole game.”

Here’s where it gets fun. Most of the coaches danced around some of these answers, because these teams are still on the schedule next year.

One coach that wasn’t diplomatic about this game was Seminole head coach Chris Burtch. Seminole did not play Brownwood this year, but faced the Lions in the 2009 playoffs.

How do you slow down a Brownwood team that has been held to less than 45 points just twice this season?

The Loboes need to run the football. A lot.

“Monahans’ best defense is their offense,” Seminole head coach Chris Burtch said. “Don’t give Brownwood the ball. Score every time you have the ball, and go for it on fourth down.”

I know going for it on fourth down seems a bit extreme, but with the team speed Brownwood has, the coaches I spoke to said Monahans probably won’t be able to break many long runs in this game.

So, it’s going to probably 3 yards and a cloud of dust. My math may be off, but 3 yards will get you to fourth-and-1 every time. Why not take advantage of the down so often used for kicking?

>> Defensively, the Loboes will have their hands full.

None of the coaches could give a definitive answer on how to stop the Brownwood offense, but really it’s pretty clear nobody has been able to find that answer. The Lions are averaging 56 points a game this season.

Burtch also gave a suggestion about how to stop Monahans’ offense.

“I would load the box and put 11 guys in there if you can,” he said. “Force Monahans to do something other than run the ball. I would dare them to run the ball.”

The Loboes don’t hide the fact that their bread-and-butter is running the ball with three or four different players. They’ve run the ball 501 times this season and attempted just 135 passes, completing 86 of them.

Of those 86 completions, 36 went to tight end Ricky Robledo. The player closest to him is running back Pedro Cano with 14 catches.

Monahans quarterback Wade Roark is an accurate passer, but throwing the ball is not what this team concentrates on.

The coaches gave varying answers on the final score, but the consensus seems to be that Monahans will be able eat up clock and keep Brownwood under 40 points, giving the Loboes a fighting chance to win this game.

It’s hard to look at two undefeated teams and definitively pick a favorite, which is why it should be exciting to watch.

Brownwood will get 40+ against Monahans. It's a formula. Stephenville laughed when I said they would get at least 40 hung on them. And Brownwood will hold nothing back this week. Nothing Vanilla...

Overtime would be a fitting end to this game.

good post...thanks for sharing!

oh geez lol

monahans are dang good don't get me wrong, i'm really looking forward to this game. It's two completly different styles of offense, but in all reality monahan will not score everytime. Bwd's defense is quick and strong, they will hold them. Maybe not every time but yes i don't see them getting over 21 pts if that. On the other hand they have NEVER seen an offense as good as Bwd's. No matter what you do you cannot prepare for Jaxon Shipley. Go ahead and triple team him, chastain, ellis, perez, ratliff will/can take over the game. Until a team is able to score on every possesion i highly doubt brownwood will be beat.

And they have a freaking massive Oline, and at the time had a monster power back and a slasher. We will be just fine. Our O is going to flat out get after it. Our D will do what they have done all year, shut it down early, let the O get a nice lead, then come after you when you start throwing the ball.

They are both felines. That's about it.

Tigers are loners. Lions are very social. One Tiger couldn't handle a pack of Loboes. A pride of Lions would ultimatley annihilate a pack of Loboes. ;)

He said "This is Roy Williams man, I'm guessing this ain't Mike, is this Chase???
I was like "uhh... yeah:D how on earth do you know me?" He said he had seen me in the Odessa American a few times back when I was playing. Then he said he also remembered me winning a halftime long pass contest at a Roughnecks game (the indoor football team in odessa) that he made an appearance at when i was like an eighth grader! lolwut.

Early and Bangs are packed with Brownwood kids, not the other way around. Early regularly campaigns against us to bleed off kids into their ISD.

And trust us, we've seen plenty of teams willing to hit us in the mouth. All of 'em ended up hitting dirt instead.

Just ask Iowa Park.

BONUS ROUND: If your kids are the hardest working around, then why are they out playing a game on Friday night? Shouldnt they be manning the drivethru at the Dairy Queen or something? :D

Oh good gravy....you are clueless....The only problem with being out in far west Texas is your perspective is out of whack. Big time... My Score Breakdown after much consideration (about 2 minutes):

Brownwood Offense vs Monahans Defense:
Drive starts inside own 20 = 40-50% scoring probability
Drive starts in own 20-40 Yard Line = 65-75% scoring probability
Drive starts in Monahans territory = 80-90% scoring probability

Monahans Offense vs Brownwood Defense:
Drive starts inside own 20 = 25-30% scoring probability
Drive starts in own 20-40 Yard Line = 35-40% scoring probability
Drive starts in Brownwood territory = 50-60% scoring probability

What does this mean? Monahans will have a lot of trouble sustaining long drives in this game. This makes eating clock difficult. Brownwood has the ability to score from ANY position on the field. Monahans will need turnovers, penalties, etc to start drives in better shape. Brownwood should have kickoffs for touchbacks (Monahans ball on 20 yard line) & Monahans will be pooch kicking (Brownwood ball at 35-40 yard line). Brownwood's ability to control field position so far this season has been unreal. Monahans HAS TO sustain drives at least long enough to change field position in their favor. If Monahans can score on a couple of 70 yard drives they stand a chance. If they cannot move the ball the length of the field and have to punt, Brownwood will get the ball with a short field and this leads to game over.

It will be quite a bit harder for Monahans to stop Brownwood than the other way around. I'm defiately not saying they can't!!! Monahans will need to win the turnover battle by 2. Monahans will be a very tough, worthy opponent that has Brownwood's full attention. It will come down to who makes the plays at the right time. In every game, there are usually 3 or 4 moments that can change the entire game for one team or the other. Who will win these moments? Can Monahan's Heart prevail? Can Brownwood's talent be too much?

Stay tuned Friday to find out

Sorry, but "WE" are not all adults here, there are way too many young adults here also, and I am sure they hear worse from their friends, but not from adults here. This is a classy, trash talking site, not a trashy-smack talking site. Apology accepted, now get back to football!

Ive seen a Lobo eat a rubics cube and crap it out solved but beating Brownwood is gonna be tougher than that.To slow them down will be harder than chinese arithmetics or harder than helping Giligan get off the island. If Monahans beats Brownwood this would be the biggest upset in sports history people.I mean it would be huge.Bigger upset than the U.S hockey team beating the Soviet Union,Bigger than Buster Douglas knocking out Mike Tyson..It would be Heart breaking for Brownwood to lose..You wont ever see that many (8000 fans) upset since they canceled M*A*S*H

Nobody said it was gonna be easy but it is very possible. Some people said that we would never have a a Black President and look at us now. They say we can't beat Brownwood and I say "YES WE CAN!"

I was listening to coach Shipley's radio show earlier and he said that the Lions practice this week was probably the best they have had all season. Looks like they are gonna be back on track this week. I am not trying to say they stunk it up last Friday but anyone who watched them all season would probably think they were a little off. I KNOW, Borger's D had a little to do with that and I KNOW!!, Manahans has a better D that Borger but I think the LIONS will be focused come Friday.

Bwood 45
Monahans 23

First off Brownwood does not have a population of 30,000... it hangs out right around 20,000. Your profile says you're a coach, so I would think you'd understand that classification hinges on the size of the school not the size of the town. BTW, Big Spring has a larger population then we do (but still not 30,000)

Second off Coleman??? Seriously... that's a 32 mile drive AND a child would have to cross school district lines 3 times. Not legal.

Third: Early and Bangs? We might have a kid or two who knows... but I promise there are more from Brownwood in Early and Bangs then the other way around.

Fourth: You may be true west Texas, but we could care less. There is good football all across this state. Besides, with your lack of geography knowledge (saying we have kids from Coleman and have 30,000 citizens) I'm surprised you even realize you're in west Texas.
