This game is going to be SO PACKED! I know BW Brings everyone, but I happened to be at the 2005 Quarterfinals game when Sweetwater beat Monahans, and Monahans brought their whole town too! it was standing room only at grande in midland.
Friday Night is going to be electric!

No! Brownwood wins because they have more fans, more posters on the 3adownlow.com and they pull their starters in the last min of the 4th quarter.

Looking at the pics of the stadium, it appears that the home and visitors sides are pretty close to the same size. I was there last year for our game against Seminole but can't remember for sure. Is this correct?

Monahans doesn't have the talent they had last year.

But every player has more heart. They remember what losing last year felt like and they are determined to never feel that again.

Brownwood has more talent on the field this year than they had last year. I also think they probably have some feelings that they will never forget after walking off the field after the Wimberly game that I am quite certain that they would like to help erase. We will find out Friday night which team wants it more!!

I understand. Brownwood was banged up last year too. Missing a starting QB most of the year makes a HUGE difference in a spread O. I'm glad everyone's healthy for this one. It's going to be a great atmosphere!

Stadium is pretty symetrical, so yes same EXCEPT parking lots. Bwd has the little side and fans will be looking for parking. There should be plenty room on the home side.

The Last time Monahans and Brownwood played in the quarterfinals was in 1970 at San Angelo Stadium and the final score was 10-10. Brownwood advanced in the playoffs on penetrations (there were no overtime games back then). They went on to win state that year. It's time to end the jinx and for the Loboes to beat Brow...nwood. Some of the 1970 football team will be in San Angelo to cheer on the Loboes. It would be great to see alumni from that era be there to see the loboes beat Brownwood!!!!!!

I feel that the following statement is extremely important to Monahans posters, your team already knows what's coming:

Beating Snyder gave you great confidence and it was a great win. But if you think that helps you in this game, well...WE ARE NOT SNYDER.

I am going on the record that Brownwood is not all HYPE, they are very talented. Monahans is not all Heart we are talented as well or we would have never made it this far in the play-offs. Heart and Hype are a waste of time at this point. IMO, whoever executes their gameplan better and catches some breaks is going to have a better chance to win. I am picking my Loboes (with an E:) ). Good luck to both teams. Hopefully that over fifty tackle football (to break the tie from the 70's) will take place before the game Friday night, before their bedtime!!!

The most explosive offenses Brownwood has played haven't scored 34 points. And Monahans doesn't have an explosive offense. Monahans will be fortunate to score 21 points. ;)

Out of mine and my husbands 5 combined children...only one of them is remotely interested in football....and he could take it or leave it.

Football is one of mine and my husbands favorite past times. Which....is why we are going to San Angelo Friday!!:D :D

EVAN REN: Brownwood could have an Achilles' heel

I have a question for you: Is it possible to be too good for your own good?

By that, I mean you’ve become so good at something that the incentive to strive can diminish, thereby increasing the chances of failure under pressure.

As silly as that question may sound, it is my contention that, in certain theaters, this scenario is indeed possible.

Athletics is one of them, particularly at the high school level, where experience is often too thin to overcome the lack of incentive.

Simply put, athletes need reasons to push themselves. They also need to taste adversity before they can know how to overcome it.

Where am I heading with all this?

Straight to Brownwood.

You see, all year long, myself and others have been spouting off about how good the Brownwood football team is, and with good reason. To this point, the Lions are one of the most dominating teams the Big Country has produced in years. Without hesitation have come comparisons with the best teams the storied Brownwood program has ever had. There’s even been talk of them being among the best Class 3A teams in the state’s history.

There is, however, a growing danger that Lions fans need to be aware of, and this is not without precedent.

Texas high school football lore is littered with the forgotten remains of great teams that failed to achieve what appeared to their destiny.

Care for some examples?

n How about the 2001 Stratford team that entered the Class 1A state semifinal game with a 14-0 record, favored by 18 points to beat Celeste. The Elks had beaten their past 11 straight opponents by three scores or more, but were upset in the semis, 32-31. Few saw it coming.

n Also in 2001, a Class 5A Houston Madison team that scored more than 700 points while building a 14-0 record, entered the state semifinals with Austin Westlake as a nine-point favorite. Madison had a kid named Vince Young at quarterback, who threw for more than 400 yards against the Chaparrals. Nonetheless, Westlake won 48-42. And keep in mind, this was a Madison team that had beaten 13 of its 14 previous opponents by at least three scores.

n Closer to home, the 2008 Abilene High team rolled through its regular season nearly untested, beating 10 straight opponents by an average of more than 30 points per game. The Eagles, however, never escaped the bi-district round, where they were upset by Mansfield, 20-14. A year later, the Eagles took the Class 5A D-II title, but how many people outside of the Big Country remember that great AHS team from 2008?

OK, I’ll spare you the history lesson.

But for every “team of destiny” that rolled through a season undefeated, there were two or three others that met their Waterloo when finally confronted with a team that pushed them into a corner.

It’s no one’s fault. It’s just the nature of the beast.

It’s an extremely difficult scenario for high school athletes to get their first real taste of game pressure when their season is on the line. And that is exactly what the Lions will face if anyone manages to get them into the fourth quarter with the outcome in doubt.

Through 13 games the Lions have drilled their opposition by an average tally of 56-15, and only one team (Borger) has managed to come within 30 points of beating them, falling 35-6.

“It certainly could be a disadvantage,” said Brownwood coach Bob Shipley of his team’s string of lopsided wins. “But of all the problems a guy could have going into the 14th week of the season, I guess that’s one of the best problems you could have.”

Agreed.

Nonetheless, the potential problem is legitimate, and it’s one Shipley tried to avert with a difficult nondistrict schedule.

Brownwood opened the season with four straight teams — Gatesville, Graham, Stephenville and Llano — that eventually made the playoffs, winning all four with ease.

In league play, they handed eventual regional semifinalist Snyder a 61-20 loss on the road, and defeated Wylie in their regular-season finale, 45-7.

As a result, the Lions enter Week 14 without having taken a single shot on the chin. We have no idea how they will respond when it finally happens, but Shipley suspects we’ll find out in the very near future.

“As far as having a close game that comes down to the fourth quarter, we really haven’t had that,” he said. “But it’s something we talk to our kids about all the time.

“There’s not anything in the world a coach can do in that situation, other than to have his kids mentally prepared for it, because it’s going to happen sooner or later.

“It’s just something we’re going to have to be ready for and hopefully we’ll respond well to it.”

It’s my guess that they will.

Stay tuned.

We have said all year that it has to be completed. Meaning Brownwood has to WIN it all. No doubt they are the favorite, that doesn't guarantee anything. Getting it done is what the coaches are preaching and that is all they can do.

It all comes down to execution. So far, so good.

I love how this Evan character backed up on all his Brownwood praising to cover his butt just in case something happens... nice move.

Good post ccmom, some may forget that this is basically the same team from last year without the injuries, so I would hope that last years playoffs are still fresh enough to avoid the letdown. Good article though.

On this north side you stay on the walkway that goes to the other side of the field.

How about this. If you are on the visitors side of the stadium, it will be the scoreboard on your right. If you are on the home side, it's on your left.

Even monahans posters can't mess that up :D

So...we are meeting on the north side....correct????

If you are by the endzone that both teams come out of, YOU ARE ON THE WRONG SIDE

Just meet under the scoreboard with the video screen on it. The other scoreboard doesn't have one unless they put one up since last week.

I've got a feeling that after Friday night we won't hear from you for about 9 months. :stirpot:

I don't know Bull. Monahans posters are notorious for not
showing up at M&G's. I think their best turn out was against
Bridgeport in Sweetwater. I believe two or three of them
showed up in either 2005 or 2008.

I thought these were all San Angelo, but I am not 100% positive about the middle one because of the difference of the color of the track.
