The Houston Astros are officially for sale. About time.

Will anyone want to buy them?

Estimated cost 700-800 million.

They been up for sale for a few years now. Wish someone would take them off Drayton's hands. For the fan's sake anyways.

They'd win the World Series within 5 years, simply because he will spend the $$$.

Cuban is not as much of a spender as he used to be. Yes he still spends, but he would not walk in and be spending like the Red Sox or yanks

Sorry, but the Astros were 13 games over .500 after the All-Star Break. With the right owner willing to spend a little, you can acquire an all-star outfielder, some talented pitchers, possibly a better SS, and this is a playoff team then.

Not sure about that. The Cards and the Reds are still far above them even if they add the pieces you talked about it, IMO

Does that cost include the stadium, or was that publicly funded?

Considering that the Rangers went for far less than that and have what's perceived to be a better future at the moment, I'm curious as to what brings the Astros value that high.

probably have to include the tv contract value where the astros and rockets just signed a joint deal for them to own their own station and the respective fan base with merchadising and all...personally, i dont konw how strong the rangers fan base is but i would guess the astros have a bigger following for now considering historically they have been the better team, this would probably change if the teams have similar performances to this year a couple years in a row...

i think the stadium was financed pubically but the astros have a 30 year lease on it or something...

the astros value is no where near what McLane is asking...he could probably get 600-650 mil in a good market but in this market maybe 550-600 which would put them right around where the rangers are....

honestly, i think McLane doesn't want to sell that bad cause he is basically asking for someone to overpay greatly to get the astros...its one of those deals where if you have a house you like to live in you would stay there if someone offered you market value or slightly over but if someone wants to go crazy and overpay you by a significant margin then you sell...of course, i could be wrong and the astros are worth more than i think or it may just be McLane throwing a number out there, seeing what he gets, and then taking the highest bidder...but honestly this seems to me that McLane is starting to get ready to sell the Astros but isn't quite there yet...

I just checked, and Forbes had the Astros at $453m and the Rangers at $451m coming into the season, so it seems that McLane is obviously just blowing smoke to try to get a ridiculous offer.

i think he had someone offer him 650 million a couple years ago but it fell through...the Forbes list was before the Astros/Rockets made their own network to start up in 2012...this probably increases their value but I doubt it is by too much...you are right the price he is asking seems ridiculous esp since most people with that kind of money are successful buisness men who you would think konw better than to overpay that much...but who knows, stranger things have happened...

It was a good run but I'm ready for a new approach. I just hope the new owner keeps Brad Mills and his staff. They seem to be doing a pretty nice job so far.

Go get 'em Mark!

But MLB won't let them sell them to him. They know he will spend the money on free agents that the Yankees want which is why they didn't let him buy the Rangers.

If he were the owner of the Rangers the Yankees wouldn't have a chance at Cliff Lee because he would outbid them and maybe even get some of the other Yankee free agents they want to resign. He is one that can and will compete with the Yankees for talent.

maybe but im more afraid of what we may get...McLane has his faults but at least he doesnt run the franchise like the Pittsburgh owners do...if we get a guy or group that tries to win then lets see what happens but if we get owners that run the team like that then its gonna really stink...

I think that offer came from Houston business man Tillman Fertitta. I look for him to put his name back in the hat.
