View Full Version : Heard enough about the IP/BW game?

We watched the game...and watched and watched. First period took an hour with about fifteen flags. Lost in the chatter was: 1) Shipley could outrun a frightened deer and probably catch about half his receptions with one hand, the BW QB can throw a city block on the money, and BW has a pickup load of other kids who are very good; 2: The IP QB's great athletic ability and effort was lost behind all the cheap shots, penalty flags, coaches arguments(yeah he did leap over at least two tacklers and made several additional jumps); 3: Why the IP coaches didn't start pulling cheap shotters, chew some arse, and put a stop to that crap early on? They had to see what you see, and 4: Why the BW coaches would leave their kids as targets of cheap shots (Shipley was the big target) instead of opting for a larger blowout? The largest positive of that mess is that Shipley and others were't seriously injured. Where is the UIL?

Actually I would love to talk about the "game". Not much has been said about anything but the most newsworthy story.

Some other things were

Iowa Park came out with every trick play in the book early and many of them worked.

Iowa Park QB was a beast. They lined him up everywhere on the field that made him eligible to touch the ball.. why have we not heard more about this kid... Also he was a class act 100% of the game. The group I was with was very impressed with him

Iowa Park kicked 3 onsides kicks and recovered them all... money says Coach Shipley and crew work on that this week.

Brownwood defense bent a little in the first half (maybe more than a little) but buckled down in the 2nd half and took care of business

Brownwoods best 2 way player only played on one kick off (Chaistain) due to hurdleing a A. Wylie player and landing hard on his butt. He was more missed on the D than on the O.

Many more things that were in this game that have not been mentioned.

Yea I be curious to know how the games would turn out when they actually play someone with some talent. Some one with the ability to take advantage of the those mistakes. Its easy to look good and correct mistakes when your playing weak teams! This will change soon and well see how well they manage.

Dude, you gotta take a deep breath and realize that you are creating an atmosphere that you just came up from the deep end! have you watched the Lions play? have you watched any team play? not knocking your team, but I have witnessed many teams including Celina Friday night. Would be an interesting game between the Liions-Celina! Who wins??, who knows? But the Lions are a good team, if not the best! I have never witnessed a more explosive offense in my life, and I have seen many a SC games, not just Brownwood.

I was there, probably the only one in the stands with a Brownwood Lions cap on! Impressed with the D, looked very salty, but then again I believe the opponent was weaker than advertised, and that may be due to the defense. Congrats on a decisive win! We left at the end of the 3rd Q, it was a bit chilly for my old bones with nothng on the line. Sorry didnt visit, but we may have an opportunity again. Know it can't happen, but would have loved to see the Lions-Bobcats on the field, would have been epic!

Ok, not to beat a dead horse, but I think the Abilene reporter summed it up nicely.

BROWNWOOD 88, IOWA PARK 24

Iowa Park decided to get rough with the top-ranked Lions, getting flagged 12 times including seven personal fouls. The Hawks where then escorted to the woodshed, where Brownwood tallied 570 yards in total offense to hand them an embarrassing defeat Thursday in Springtown. This is definitely a team you don’t want to anger.

Beating a dead hors would not have to happen if so many teams did not make the playoffs. Over the last few years several non-deserving teams (not all, but the majority) make the playoffs and result to this kind of play in hopes of ruining another teams season because deep down they know they don't have much of a chance to advance far in the playoffs. Heck if they they finished third in their district not likely to win six straight for a state ring in DII anyway right?

Generally speaking it is unlikely to happen and it is a great story when it does. If you decreased the number of playoff teams in district or made districts larger then teams would have to put forth more effort in district. When you have a four team distict and three make the playoffs you know after second district game if you are going to playoffs and change how you approach each game. If Bandera had more pressure on them in district play maybe they would have finished better than third anyway.

I don't think they were undeserving of a playoff trip at all, they just ran into a buzz saw of a football team from Brownwood.

Well yeah....now that you add variables to it....but that's not what you said in your above post, which prompted my response!!

I think Monahans just shouldn't even be allowed in the post season, all they ever do is lose.

Last year our district had 2 teams go farther than Monahans. Just food for thought

2? Wylie, Graham, and Brownwood. Didn't Graham beat Monahans the same weekend we beat Seminole?

They lost to Burnet (Shipley/McGee) who went to the finals & to us, who made the playoffs for the first time in almost a decade (went 10-2).
