Robstown vs. Sweeny **Area Round**

Well good times are here in Robstown after scoring our first football playoff win in more then 50 years. Robstown is on a roll on both sides of the ball but more so on defense when the 'Pickers racked up more then 6+ sacks vs. Port Isabel.

Don't know much about Sweeny yet but hope to have some video posted on here soon.

I look for Robstown to keep bringing the wood on D and control that clock with that rushing attack and beef O-line. Hopefully soon we will have a time and location set up. Maybe Victoria or Port Lavaca would be a far neutral site for both teams.

I am hoping for Victoria location. Both Victoria schools are playing in San Antonio including one at the dome, I believe. With Miller using the stadium on Friday night. A Saturday game in Victoria makes the most sense. But this is all speculation at this point.

Yep! Like I posted even both Victoria schools are playing in San Antonio and against teams from the Rio Grande Valley. One at the dome and one at Comalander Stadium. Not sure which one that is though.

In Robstown's defense, Refugio is an excellent 2A ballclub who could beat many 3A's and yes if Sweeny plays well we can be a very good 3A ballclub.

My gut is telling me that Robstown will keep it close for about 2 qtrs. Even though I didn't get to watch the Ingleside/Robstown game I think Sweeny's overall size and speed is going to wear them down.

In no way am I saying that Robstown has no chance and that they won't make this a good game. As a matter of fact I think it is great that they have an opportunity to make this a statement game and come out with a win.

Except I dont believe that Robstown is near as good. I'll go out on a limb and say Sweeny is almost as good as Sinton as long as they eliminate a few mistakes. If the Dawgs are on their game it could be tough for Robstown to stop them.

Turnovers killed us vs. Sinton and had we not giving up a fumble for a Td, that game would have been a lot closer. This has trap game written all over for Sweeny and Robstown being a well coached team, they will be mentally prepared.

dont feel like they were ever in position to win vs royal. they played better versus other teams however. i couldnt believe needville beat sweeny. they are playing much better now!

should be entertaining. Ingleside lacked some size, Robstown not as big as Sweeny but they're a physical team this year and for them to stay in it will need that defense to keep playing like they have. Their qbs are good runners and not a solid passing game might find it hard to score in this game so they'll need their defense to keep them in the game.

Eating up the clock is what Robstown does best and look for that to happen come Saturday. Robstown's D will be ready as always and show no signs of slowing down anytime soon. This will be another game that Robstown will bring Sweeny to play our style of football. Is it Saturday yet? :D I'm already getting use to these predictions on how they will score 30+ on us. I Cant wait for this game..!! Robstown sure didn't amaze me on their film! they would get 5th in our district if Palacios wouldn't beat them. Thats just my opinion. Only way they beat the Dogs is if the Dogs beat themselves point blank.

With all due respect the same thing could have been said if Ingleside scored the 4 times they were in Sweeny's redzone. The game would have been a lot closer that what the score was. Sweeny got it done and we didn't. We had probably as many turnovers and mistakes as you all did. ;)

Sinton lowest offensive yardage on offense was 241 yds to Robstown. Robstown also held Refugio to its lowest total of the year of 291 yds on offense. Raymondville lowest total of the year also against Robstown 251 yards.

Robstown was up on Ingleside 38-17 late in the 4th qtr before Ingleside scored two late tds to make the score closer 38-30.

After reading through this thread, I still have a hard time thinking Sweeny won't handle Robstown if they just limit their mistakes and turnovers. That will be key. If The Pickers' D is as good as it's being advertised....the Dogs might not get as many chances as they did w/ Ingleside's young team.

With that said.....GO SWEENY!!! Robstown problem in the games against Sinton and Refugio was turnovers that were returned for tds. Not sure if they're still turnover prone but for them to have any chance in this game they'll have very little room for errors as Sweeny D is very impressive but will see how they'll do against a team that will pound the middle of the field and mix in qb keepers.

Sweeny was far and away the better team, but maybe that's just me. :confused:

I don't think Robstown has any depth issues. They are a big, physical team that will match up well with Sweeny. Both teams like to shoot themselves in the foot so this might come down to special teams. :eek: Who has the better field goal kicker? :D

There is no doubt by either team who has the speed but to level the playing field they will depend on being physical. thats just from what i've seen from 3 times this year was able to see them. Robstown not satisfied with one playoff win

ROBSTOWN — A lot has happened in the world since 1956. There have been numerous advancements made in medicine, science, and technology, as well as many historical milestones.

Time seemed to stand still for the Robstown football program, however.

Until last week’s 37-7 Class 3A Division II bi-district victory, the Cotton Pickers went 54 years without winning a playoff game. That stretch also included a 42-year postseason drought, which the team ended in 2008.

As Robstown (8-3 overall) prepares for Saturday’s area matchup against Sweeny (7-3), it’s the recent history that’s powering the Cotton Pickers — mostly the painful memories of missing the playoffs last season.

“We know there hadn’t been a playoff win in a while, but we thought we’d go three times in a row after making it two years ago,” fifth-year Robstown coach Doug Wood said. “We were a little disappointed about that. That’s the motivator for the kids, right there. We wanted to start doing things that hadn’t been done in a while.”

The win over perennial playoff representative Port Isabel is a good start.

Robstown rushed for 230 yards — 20 below its average — and held the Tarpons to only 103 total yards, 82 rushing and 21 passing. Running back Marty Gutierrez rushed for 103 yards and a touchdown, while quarterback Randy Flores, Brandon Elizondo and Josh Gaona each scored on the ground.

Flores leads the team with 1,067 yards and 14 touchdowns, followed by Gutierrez with 907 yards and six scores. Elizondo has rushed for 430 yards and a touchdown, with Flores also having passed for 686 yard and eight touchdowns.

Wood said an unselfish nature and consistent play by offensive linemen Federico Hernandez, Joseph Martinez, Leo Rendon, Jesse Reyes and Isaac Tamez have been crucial to the success.

“The thing about it is it doesn’t matter who’s getting the yards. The bottom line is winning games,” Wood said. “The wide receivers are taking pride in their blocking and understand that we’re not going to throw the ball 30 times. Every week it’s a different running back carrying the load. We’re playing as a team.

“There’s an old adage — stats are for losers. All we care about is having more points than the other team.”

The defense certainly did its part last week, allowing only a short touchdown run in the first quarter. The Cotton Pickers went on to score 37 unanswered points, including a 55-yard fumble return by Jacob Garcia.

Robstown also held Refugio — the state’s No. 1 team in Class 2A — to its lowest point total of the season back in Week 3. The Cotton Pickers also outgained the Bobcats 310-291 in the 36-6 non-district loss.

“They were, without question, the toughest opponent of all 10 games we’ve played,” Refugio coach Jason Herring said. “They’re very well coached, very physical and really come off the football. They do a great job and were very impressive. It doesn’t surprise me the success they’re having.”

The Cotton Pickers certainly don’t want it to end now, not after bringing an end to more than 50 years of futility.

“We’ve been on the other side, but now the kids have a taste of what it’s like,” Wood said. “Sometimes the will to not lose is greater than the will to win. That’s what we believe. That we are not going to lose.”
