San Benito? Good grief. And on Friday no less. The last time Mathis faced Raymondville was in the postseason in 98 (bidistrict). It was a close game, but then our starting QB went down with a knee injury and Raymondville was able to pull away.

Thats exactly what I said when I saw Mathis played Needville in San Marcos...talk about drive for both schools. San Benito makes a good choice for us since its a nice large new stadium within 25 miles from Raymondville.

Yay, another spread team. Good sized QB and WR. Small on the line, so that should be an interesting battle between theirs and the Mathis DL. Don't look terribly fast, so Mathis should be able to use speed to their advantage. Still a dangerous team at 10-1, so Mathis needs to prepare well and continue to play smart, disciplined football.

The lone loss was to a Hidalgo team that missed the playoffs in a very competitive, and large (9 teams), district 32-4A. They've got some video on Youtube, and will be running a lot out of the spread. The QB doesn't have a great arm, but he's fairly accurate. He's pretty stiff in the pocket though, so won't be as big a running threat like the other spread QBs that Mathis has defended.

I remember that 98 playoff game vs. Raymondville. The Bearcats not only beat the Pirates, they beat them up. Injuries galore. They beat Sinton the next round, very good team that year. Mathis is not as good as their 99 team, and Raymondville is not as good as their 98 team, but it should be a good game. Going with the Pirates!!

They were a great team. No one incredible athlete carrying the squad, just a bunch of kids playing as a team above their individual talent levels to become a sum greater than the total of its parts.

Now, before anyone goes on the attack, I mean this in the most complimentary way. They were fun to watch and to follow. While my brother was on the team and I suppose I am biased in that respect, I would have enjoyed watching them with or without a family member playing. Good group of kids that played well together...

Yup. Navarro will be a challenge for sure. They're a slot team, but they're more balanced with the mix of run and pass. They've had some questionable losses but have also had some big wins over very good competition. It should be a great match-up.
