VIDOR — Another District 21-3A Cross Country Classic.
Another mission accomplished for both the Bridge City boys and girls cross country teams at Claiborne Park Wednesday morning.
Sparked by first-place wins by seniors Kirby Shepherd and Mary Nguyen, the Lady Cardinals won the district title for the 11th straight year while the Cardinal boys won it for the 10th time in 11 years.
“Both teams did an excellent job today in muggy conditions,” said Cardinal coach Cody Knight. “I’m so proud of all of the kids, they went out and performed really well. I couldn’t be prouder of Mary Nguyen. She’s been so close to winning district the last several years and she battled through and got it her senior year. You have to give credit to Kirby Shepherd too. He battled with an injury through the early part of the season and has come on strong of late.”
As usual, both teams easily advance on to the Class 3A Region III Cross Country Championships Saturday, Nov. 6 at Humble Atascocita High School.
Shepherd spearheaded the Cardinal boys, who put all seven runners in the top seven places, by placing first over the three-mile course in 18 minutes, 5.77 seconds.
Shepherd was followed by teammates Luke Hebert (second, 18:11.23), Armando Chavez (third, 18:19.93), Aaron Lejeune (fourth, 18:49.74), Eric Chesson (fifth, 18:53.46), Brock Jones (sixth, 19:03.69) and Sawyer Hogan (seventh, 19:18.04).
“The kids’ goal was to not only win district, but it was also finishing first through seventh at district,” said Knight. “We’ve gotten close over the years but they went out and got that today and they did it impressively.”
The Cardinal boys easily won the district title with the maximum score of 15.
On the girls side of the ledger, Nguyen came through big to win the individual title in her senior year, covering the two-mile terrain in 12:49.66.
Nguyen was followed closely by teammates Bree Fontenot (second, 12:57.91), Meagan Shockley (third, 13:00.91), Jessica Franklin (sixth, 13:14.06), Alex Holland (12th, 14:30.82), Arron Valencia (15th, 14:40.64) and Adriane Cude (20th, 15:35.19).
“The girls have been having one heckuva year,” said Knight. “To win district for the 11th straight year was quite a feather in their caps but they’re hungry and want more. They think they can make it to state and we’ve got a tough region to go through but both teams are focused and they’re going to give it their best shot. Going to state would be awesome.”
The Lady Cardinals captured team title honors by totaling 24 points. They were followed by Hamshire-Fannett (46), Orangefield (59), Hardin-Jefferson (111) and Silsbee (134).
Kayla Williams paced Orangefield, finishing a solid fourth with a time of 13:01.90. Other Lady Bobcats included Kasidy Hayes (11th, 14:25.51), Hanna Walles (13th, 14:34.85), Haley Hooker (14th, 14:37.17), Vivian Luong (17th, 15:26.75), Emily Blanke (25th, 16:15.06) and Ashlee Broussard (28th, 17:05.51).
The Cardinal boys won the team title with 15 points followed by Hamshire-Fannett (58), Silsbee (75) and Hardin-Jefferson (92).
David Rainey paced the Orangefield boys, placing 10th overall and teammate Blaise Hawkins was 18th.
Haymon Papillion placed 12th overall for West Orange-Stark followed by teammates Macco Mouton (28th), Jerrious Tims (32nd) and Gereman Chavez (34th)
