wo-s by nose....oh, sorry, my bad....

head says caldwell, emotions say rattlers.....God help navasota if they can't run the ball with the lead in the 4th qtr or caldwell has proven they'll make them pay.....rattlers by 3.......

Depends on Rattlers' defensive secondary. If their LB's can drop out of run coverage and pick up those stealthy Hornet receivers, it'll be a close game and I'd say Rattlers by a TD at home. If not, Hornets by 10.

Should be another great game! Good luck to both teams.....

Hey, come on down. I actually live in the Spring area and I work in The Woodlands. Normaly, I leave work and I head to Navasota from there making it to the game right around 7:15ish (if I am lucky) depending on the HWY 105 traffic.

I don't recall it being too busy before a game, but, I must admit, I really haven't paid too much attention.

Caldwell at Navasota: The Caldwell Hornets and Navasota Rattlers were playoff representatives from District 24-3A last season, and they meet in a matchup of District 23-3A unbeatens Friday at Rattler Stadium.

Caldwell is unbeaten at 7-0, surviving a great game with Giddings last week. Navasota is 5-2. The records are deceiving. Caldwell has faced only one team with a winning record, when the Hornets closed nondistrict play with a 21-15 victory at Brookshire Royal.

Navasota's two losses are to teams with a combined record of 14-1. Class 4A Rudder (6-1) topped the Rattlers 17-0. Class 2A Division I powerhouse Cameron (8-0), another former district rival, edged Navasota 35-33.

So don't let the records muddy the waters. This should be an outstanding game between teams that have made themselves playoff perennials.

Navasota has been to the Division I quarterfinals three straight years. Eventual state champions ousted both from postseason last year -- Division I champ Gilmer edged the Rattlers, and Division II winner Carthage defeated the Hornets.

The Bryan-College Station Eagle picks......

Caldwell at Navasota -- Can Caldwell be rattled? Caldwell 34-31.

If Caldwell can keep the speed of Navasota contained I see a tough game for the rattlers. Thus if Navasota can stop the slot-t they will have a chance and we will have a ball game. Over the past 3 years I have noticed Navasota becoming better defending the slot-t from 2007 game when Caldwell had won and had racked 49 on the rattlers, to holding them to 14 points last year and then 27 I believe the year before in a heart-breaker. If the defense comes out to play first quarter and contains the elusive backfield and the receivers and makes the rattlers beat them with power I have Caldwell by 7. On contrast Navasota plays lights out defense and has breaks on offense Rattlers by 7. Going to be a good game! Dissapointed im going to miss this!

With 30 second to go Navasota had 3rd and goal at the 1 and fumbled a deep pitch back to the 9. With five seconds left the navasota kicker missed the fg way way wide left. Should set up nicely for a exciting 2nd half.

Navasota almost gave it away on the opening kickoff of the second half. Ian Day threw an interception on the first play, setting up Caldwell 75 yards away from their last score of the game. Caldwell was up 20-13 at that point. Caldwell tried an onside and touched it early. They forced a three and out and seemed to have all the momentum at that point.
Navasota intercepted a pass that bounced out of the Hornet receiver's hands, off Antoine Burrell's leg, and into his hands, and he returned it 50 yards to the Hornet 12. Ian Day connected with Alfon Taylor to tie it up.
Navasota kicked an onside that went one yard beyond the tee out of bounds, but held Caldwell on 4th and 2 inches short.
The Rattlers drove down and Antoine Burrell scored, and Ian Day scored, and the XP was blocked to make it 26-20 Rattlers.
Navasota kicked it deep, and the Horned player muffed it and fell at the 5. Navasota held the Hornets to a 3 and out, and drove down the field and Kesnick Jones fell in for the score.
Caldwell was held one final time, and Navasota ran out the clock for the win.

Caldwell had three long scoring drives, but every short field opportunity they had came up empty. I noticed they looked very thin on the sideline, as I only counted 28 players suited out. The slot-T is a hard offense to stop, but depth may be an issue as they go forward. Congratulations to the Rattlers on holding the Hornets to their season low on points, though I don't know what the yardage looked like yet. Good luck to the Hornets moving forward.

And the lack of recoveries as well. Navasota's kickoff man looked dang good kicking it deep, getting one three yards deep into the endzone. But he sure couldn't kick a bouncer onsides to save his life!

Congrats to Navasota!

Caldwell has been through a meet grinder the past 3 out of 4 weeks and I figured it would catch up with them, to bad it was this week.

I am a long time fan of hornet football. I always ride with them, but after last night. The hornets are in deep trouble. They have not played good defense because they changed their defensive tackles. BR could not run up the middle on the hornets but when they changed some of the players, Smithville, Giddings, and Navasota ran wild on them. I am not a coach but you can't make a player into something that he do not have the ability to be. The hornets appeared to have lost two key players last night. #54 injury looked bad. He is their best defensive player. Congrats to Navasota they played a good game. They are a well coached team.

This is just an observation because I surely have not seen ANY of these teams play, but maybe BR did not match up well with the Caldwell front, but the other teams listed, did. However, looking at Caldwells schedule, I have to admit that I am kind of baffled at their defense. Starting the year with 2 shutouts and looking strong for the first part of the season, but the last few weeks it appears the wheels have come off defensively.

What do the district standings look like now?

I counted 28 players suited up, and two were injured during the game. Jenkins, who I believe is #54, was injured late in the 4th with the game already well in hand. He was a beast last year in Caldwell, when he sacked Kye Hildreth five times. I would hate to see him sidelined.

We have lost two players to torn ACL's this season - both have already had surgery. We lost none to grades, thank goodness. Jenkins, I have heard, should be back this week against LG.

I am not 100% certain about these numbers, but pretty sure, we have 2 freshman, and 4 sophomores suited up on varsity. Eleven juniors and ten seniors. This is not what we started with. At the beginning of the season we had 24 upperclassmen, lost the two to ACL, and started bringing some of the younger guys up.

There is no depth on the hornet roster, but there is tons of experince with some of the kids being 3 year starters. I do see the depth of our team being a problem if we advance to playoffs, but I do know coaches will have them kids physically and mentally prepared. Congrats on the good win Navasota. Time to go to work in Caldwell!
