The Gonzales Apaches have turned it around behind the great coaching staff put together by Ricky Lock & CO. I know they have some athletes, the Cray Kid (nephew of Apache great Justin Eleby, Apache WR 99 -01) some great RB's and Coach Lock's son is evidently a stud at LB.

I don't recall Gonzales ever going 6 - 0 even in their successfull years (99 - 01). But, through their first 5 games, their opponents' combined record is 7 - 17 ( Miller 1- 3, Lanier 1 -4, Luling 1-4, Columbus 3-2, Yoakum 1-4). This not a nock on the Apaches because you play who is on your schedule. But, with the district they are in being not what it used to be ( poteet 2- 3, Sam Houston 4 -1, La Vernia 1 -3, but the bears have played one of the toughest schedule around, Pleasanton 3 -2, and Cuero 3-2, Gobblers have played a tough schedule around but are a different football team without Jackson,) is this the season the Apaches finally end their district championship drought? (Gonzales Apaches District Championships - 63' (pre desegregation), 99, 2001?

A lot of old Apaches sure hope they will.

Glad to see Gonzales is having a good year. District championship? Not sure about that. I think the Gobbler faithful will have something to say about that. Even without Jackson!

Good Luck until you play Cuero. :D

I believe I will hold my comments about this string until it actually happens. Are the Apaches good enough to win district? Remains to be seen. Hope they are, but I am still a little sceptical. I will know more after they play SH and LaVernia. I do like their heart though. BTW, congratulations to the Apaches for being the Army Strong team for 3A schools in Texas this week.

Really great to see Gonzales back on the winning side of things. It's been a long time and I know the fans are really excited about it. And they should be. Good luck Gonzales!

Coach Lock was no dummy when he came back to Gonzales. He knew they had one of the worst records in school history. To win TEAM and the Town over, he had to Get W's. He did what he had to do when the realignments came out. He set up a non distric schedule in hopes to get a few WS's and help bring fun to the games again, and it worked. Now he would hope the W's will carry over when the tuff part of the schedule gets here. The team will learn very soon if that non distric schedule was all worth it.

Horse hockey. Had some absolutely fantastic teams in the late 70's and early 80's that were playing in 4A. Erwin Ckodre coached them. It was the days that only one team advanced to the playoffs. Several of those teams finished 9-1. I even remember one of those teams being ranked #1 in the state for a while that year. I think several of them would have beaten the '07 and '99 teams easily. Also you have forgotten the '63 team that went 11-0-1 and advanced to the quarterfinals that year. Gave up 32 points in 12 games. Unfortunately twenty of those came in the last game when they tied with PSJA at McAllen and lost on first downs. Horrid way to go out. Sudden death is much better.

Actually we were second in 07 and played cuero in week 9 for the district title... Beat ingleside and then Hidalgo before losing to Pleasanton in OT in the quarterfinals...

Actually the worst call of the game came in the first half when columbus botched a field goal attempt and Gonzo was called for a facemask penalty that moved the ball to the 3 yd line... horrible Call....

well, were 5-0 and it beats the hell out of being 1-9... very thrilled... Columbus couldn't cover the Cray kid so they had to hold and interfere him in the second half.... he made 2 great catches in the endzone... Come to think of it, they couldn't cover anyone... Quit hatin, and worry about your own team......

cockyness? How is that cocky? If you saw the film you know about the catches I'm talking about... and Columbus didn't defend the pass well in the second half... Just like we didn't defend the run well in the first half... I didn't say we are great... But we are much improved!!!

Can't wait to prove you wrong Super Legit. I was at the Gonzales vs. Columbus game and your boys were dragging second half. Looked like they were out of shape and just got plain out coached and out played. Sorry. Maybe too many boys were playing both ways and it just caught up to them after half time. Defense was terrible. Yea, there were alot of penalties called on Columbus because they were doing alot of things wrong!!!!

Everyone forgets the '93 team that only lost to good Giddings team that advanced far in Region III that year and the Clint Finley led Cuero team. The Apaches went 8-2-1 that year. Played #2 ranked team in Sweeny in bidistrict and tied them 13-13. The two teams were tied in penetrations as well and the game was decided on first downs (before OT) Sweeny 10 Gonzales 9. That '93 team would have run over this '10 team..

That Cuero team lost the state final to Southlake Carroll that year 14-6.

That was a good game in '93. It was so sad to lose that playoff game that way.

It really does get complicated when you start comparing teams from different eras. I do remember that '93 team because they were a great bunch of kids. They lost out the same way the '63 team did, on first downs. Sometimes life is a real beach.
