This is starting to happen a few times every year. I think Keller was the first to do it. He's now an honorary member of the coaching staff.

Meet Ike Ditzenberger, a young man who plays football for the Snohomish (Washington) varsity high school Panthers. Actually, you may have already met him. It was last year when Ike made news by scoring a touchdown in the Snohomish junior varsity's last game of the season. It's noteworthy because Ike has Down syndrome, and only gets onto the field for one play per game. His TD run last year made the news because it came against Snohomish's rival, Lake Stevens, whose players, in a remarkable display of sportsmanship, let Ike score.

This season Ike is on the varsity, and on Friday Snohomish again played Lake Stevens. Would there be an Ike Ditzenberger touchdown redux, this time on the big stage?

Love the dance at the end.

From the Everett Herald:

So soon after the Ditzenbergers moved to Snohomish, Ike and his parents went to the high school and met the head football coach. They explained Ike's desire to play.

"Young man, you can be on my team for the next four years," coach Mark Perry said. "But you've got to lose that gut."
Perry's welcoming attitude -- and sense of humor -- delighted the Ditzenbergers. The coach has "a really generous heart. He sets the tone for the whole team," Kay Ditzenberger said. "They see him embracing Ike and treating him with respect and then they do the same thing."

The same could be said for the coaches and players at Lake Stevens. Well played, my friends. Now where the heck did I put my handkerchief? Darned allergies ...
