BIG SPRING -- Big Spring mastered the art of the comeback on Friday, as the Steers battled back from a 16-point deficit to beat Midland Christian, 34-30 at Memorial Stadium.

"This is a huge win," Big Spring head coach Phillip Ritchey said. "I think this is one that can turn our season around. We were pretty down last week and we were still down after halftime."

The Mustangs were doing everything right in the first half. Running back Tanner Dobbs and quarterback Bryant Burleson highlighted a first half full of offense from Midland Christian.

Dobbs answered Big Spring's first score with a 25-yard run on the first play of Midland Christian's second offensive possession. It was made possible by a 66-yard kickoff return from Christian Whigham that put the Mustangs deep into Big Spring territory.

After that, Big Spring could hardly move the ball and the Mustangs just kept scoring, scoring three touchdowns and a field goal in the second quarter.

That's all they did for the rest of the night, though.

Big Spring quarterback DaVonte Anderson, running back Pete Chavarria and receiver Mike Menefield led a second-half charge that ended in a Steers win.

The Steers' passing attack opened up with Menefield getting all of his 57 yards receiving in the second half. His 37-yard touchdown catch in the third made it 30-20.

Big Spring's defense shut the Mustangs down in the second half, but Midland Christian did have its chances. A failed 33-yard field goal attempt gave the Steers a chance to cut into the lead and another missed field goal gave Big Spring the ball back down 30-26 with 7 minutes, 5 seconds remaining in the game.

As a result, the Steers took advantage and Dayvion Young's 2-yard score with a little more than three minutes left sealed the win.

"We played a good half of football," Midland Christian head coach Greg McClendon said. "We had to put four quarters together. Didn't coach four quarters, didn't play four quarters. I take responsibility for it."

Friday's game also was delayed for about 15 minutes due to lightning.
