ZAPATA — The Port Isabel Tarpons were desperate for a win.

And they went out and earned it.

Behind a solid game from the defense and big outings from Blake Sapp and C.J. Boyd, the Tarpons held off Bandera 27-20 on Saturday at Zapata’s Hawk Stadium.

PI (2-3) led 13-6 at the half and turned back the Bulldogs (0-5) late to preserve the win.

"We knew we needed to play well and come out with a win,"PI head coach Monty Stumbaugh said. "The kids fought hard and we’re real proud of them.

We were a little short-handed and several kids played both ways. It was a physical game and our kids just played their hearts out."

Sapp ran the offense Saturday and had two scoring runs for the Tarpons. Luis Aguilera returned an interception 50 yards for a touchdown and Matt Martinez ran in a short one to round out the scoring.

Despite some second-half miscues, the Tarpons got stops courtesy of their defense.

With the Bulldogs down 7 and driving in the fourth quarter, the PI defense forced a fumble to stave off the threat.

Though they gave it back a few plays later, another stop clinched the game and they later ran out the clock.

"This was the most physcial we’ve played on defense this year," Stumbaugh said. "It’s a great win before district and it gives us momentum. Now we’ll rest up next week before we open with a big one against Zapata."
