I know most folks have more urgent and important concerns right now, but tomorrow my beloved Chocolate Lab Shadow goes in for surgery. The vet thinks he has a hemangioma of the spleen which is operable. However, a small percent of them are malignant and inoperable. Shadow is my best friend and he is like a son to me. Please keep him in your prayers. Thank you and God Bless.

its no coincidence He's known as our Shepherd.....shepherds love animals to the point of self sacrifice.....i think you asked admirably, giving due to the lost human life lately while expressing a need for your loved "sheep".....shadow will be easy to remember on my knees, my chocolate lab growing up was named Black Gal and i miss her 40 years later......thanks, pud.....

Wishing the best for you and Shadow, Pud. I lost an old girl that had been with me since puppyhood last year and it was harder on me than it was on her.

I wish to thank all of you for your kind words and prayers. Sadly I must report that Shadow passed away this day at noon. His tumor was malignant and had spread to his kidney and vena cava and was inoperable. Rather than put him through the pain of surgical recovery with very little chance of surviving more than a few painful weeks we euthanized him on the OR table. My son and I buried him in one of his favorite spots under a pecan tree. He is in heaven now in some Elysian field chasing sticks thrown by some little child forever young and happy. That's where kind and gentle dogs go you know.

I am so so sorry to hear this. I had a furry child for almost 17 years before losing him in 2004. To this day it remains one of the most difficult times in my life. I will be praying for you.

Thank you all for your kind words and prayers. My daughter sent me this poem and I thought I'd share it with you.

The Rainbow Bridge

inspired by a Norse legend

By the edge of a woods, at the foot of a hill,
Is a lush, green meadow where time stands still.
Where the friends of man and woman do run,
When their time on earth is over and done.
For here, between this world and the next,
Is a place where each beloved creature finds rest.
On this golden land, they wait and they play,
Till the Rainbow Bridge they cross over one day.
No more do they suffer, in pain or in sadness,
For here they are whole, their lives filled with gladness.
Their limbs are restored, their health renewed,
Their bodies have healed, with strength imbued.
They romp through the grass, without even a care,
Until one day they start, and sniff at the air.
All ears prick forward, eyes dart front and back,
Then all of a sudden, one breaks from the pack.
For just at that instant, their eyes have met;
Together again, both person and pet.
So they run to each other, these friends from long past,
The time of their parting is over at last.
The sadness they felt while they were apart,
Has turned into joy once more in each heart.
They embrace with a love that will last forever,
And then, side-by-side, they cross over… together.

So sad to hear your news of your Shadow pup. They are almost like kids in a family (only they mind better usually). Nothing but time and good memories will help get you feeling better. I lost my Golden Retriever almost 6 years ago and still have not replaced him. Many say that another dog is the best medicine but I think that is up to the individual. But the Lord has blessed me with 3 beautiful children to keep me up all night.

It is amazing how smart Labs and Goldens are. I think this is why they are so hard to get over when they pass.

Again, sorry and condolences from Giddings.
