View Full Version : Why Did Your Best Team(s) Win or Not Win a SC/SC's?

For the Bulls, it is the "Not Win" category and I think it breaks down this way:

2001 Semis- The Bulls were beaten by a very athletically talented Commerce team that went on to win a SC. They had the people in the places to handle the powerful Bull "O" QB'd by Phillip Daugherty.

2008- Quarters(?)- The Bulls were beaten by an exceptional LH team that was really good on both sides of the ball, and especially in the running of the Slot-T on offense. The Bull QB and RB were dinged up from the tough Monahans game the week before and were not a factor, except in the passing game. The LH team was the better team and went on to meet Celina.

I would say probably because the other team scored more points, but that may be just for cameron :D

2000 - Forney - Dabryan Blanton fumbled around the 10 going into score. La Grange was able to run the restnof the clock out.
2001 - ran into eventual state champs Everman who I have seen on some greatest 3As list. Played infront of an over capacity crowd at Pennington field
2002 - Everman again. This time Texas stadium. PI remember forney completed a hail mary as time expired that was short because the play before Frney got screwed on an intentional grounding call.
2003 - Ran into Gainesville who went on to win it all. Darden McBeth made a number if impossible catches for long gains. I think Forney had the lead then lost it late.

4 years in a row losing to the eventual state champ by 4 points or less.

I knew somebody was going to post that somewhere in here....:D
Oh well, I'm not looking for this to turn into a excuse or brag thread, I would just like to hear honest opinions of why posters think certain outstanding teams succeeded while others fell a little short.

I was at that game. Daugherty was running for his life most of the game. OL couldn't protect him. Whatever happened to him anyway?

For Sinton:
'01 Finals against Everman
No one beat them that year.
Forney considered themselves to be #2 even though Sinton played in the title game.:nerd:

Won 2 SCs because LE was... Bigger, stronger, faster and play defense.
Lost 98 Reg Finals just due to never being there

Lost in 03 Reg Finals to a heck of a Gainsville team

Lost in 05 semis because starting TB took a cheap shot in wk 9 and was not close to 100%

Lost in 07 to SC winner

Lost in overtime 09 going for 2 and the win in OT
if the back tucks and runs for corner LE wins. He decided to pass and ballgame.

1995 32-21 loss to undefeated La Marque squad that gave up only 68 pts all year. They went on to destroy Denison 31-8 in SC game.

1996 24-21 OT loss to La Marque. They went on to destroy Denison again in SC 34-3

In my opinion it always boils down to turnovers and penalties(played a better team).

The best team at Everman not to win state was the 2008 team that went 14-1 and lost to Sulphur Springs...best DE flunked a class and was out...other DE got hurt in the first quarter and then out tailback got hurt in the 2nd quarter and they moved our top safety to tailback...needless to say Tyrik Rollison and the Sulphur Springs offense worked Everman over in the 2nd half...it was tough to watch....

Emerson in 2002 Everman beat Forney by 7...fyi

1991 burnet lost to groesbeck 7-0, this after beating southlake carroll, don't remember much because i was just a pup for that one

2002- Lost to everman 35-14, just got flat outplayed in that one. everman definitely had the emotional edge in that one due to the cory fulbright injury early on

2003- Lost to gainesville big, terrius pervey, darcel mcbath, etc. great leopard team that year, had no real answer for those guys. jordan shipley was playing on some busted up toes in this one, but i'm not sure how much of a difference that really made

Less then 11 point loss for Forney. Plus Forney beat the other 3A state champ earlier in the year.

#3 Commerce
#4 Sinton

That DL for Commerce was a monster! Big big guys.

P. Daugherty went to Tech, sat for a couple of years, then went to Sam Houston.

2009 Argyle

As has become the trend here, the coaches could not adjust their defensive scheme to prevent one player from beating them. Antonio Graves was a better player that night, but Pleasant Grove was not a better team.

However, I'm absolutely certain that Brownwood would have beaten us regardless.

Celina in 2006. We were undefeated and playing Liberty Hill in the state game. We had a 4th and 1 on the LH 25 yardline with the score tied 19-19 with less than 4 minutes to go. LH stopped us and busted a long run to the 15 and kicked a 31 yard field goal that wouldnt have been good from 32. I still remember the kickers name :(

G-I-O! :D

Yeah, that'd be why we won the first one! Well, just ONE of the reasons. :p

Second one - we were on a mission to have an undefeated season. Demolishing teams in the process was just an added plus. ;)

The best teams that didn't win? IMO they were 2002, 2004 & 2008. Various reasons why we didn't...

Smart@$$... That was 2002, and we were in the semifinals in 4A that year, lost to Texas High by 14 then they went on to win state the next week 42-3 or something like that. Who knows, could a 4A semifinalist have knocked off that 3A champ? Maybe so.

2005 Calallen

Not sure this was our best team, but so far it's the only one to make the finals. We lost our QB Ryan Duke early in the state game to a knee injury and had to put in a soph who had only played garbage time. We hung in pretty good with Hebron for a while but never really could sustain any drives. The defense wore out in the 4th and Hebron pulled away.

This group was a perfect example of how great team chemistry can propel a group to unknown heights. Those guys really loved playing together.

Because we ran into a better Houston Yates 1985, Paris 1988, LaMarque 1995 and 1997, Ennis 2000 and Wimberley 2005 team on the way (all of which ended up being State Champs)

We had the now legendary Yates team on the ropes in the 4th Quarter tied 6-6 with WOS (the smallest 5A team in the state at the time) leading in penetrations 3-1 and let it slip away. Paris just ran the same play over and over and over and we couldn't stop them. LaMarque was always a battle and I believe they had to come from behind to beat us in the late 4th Quarter in 1995. 1997 we were ranked #6 and LaMarque was unranked but they were on a roll going for their 3rd in a row. Ennis was the first time we had ever gone up against the Spread (and we were one of the smallest 4A teams in the state at the time) and we were behind 31-0 at half... adjusted and outscored them 24-7 in the 2nd half but it wasn't enough. Wimberley just outplayed us from beginning to end despite having now NFL player and #11 1st round draft pick Earl Thomas as our lead man.

:( :D

In 1986 and 1987 (when we won) we just had the right group of players at the right time with one of the best coaching staff in the state.

We got knocked out of the playoffs once on missed extra points. That is uniquely and particularly painful. Ouch.

Tell me. If memory serves we'd scored 7 touchdowns and missed every PAT. We ended up losing something like 45-42.
