The effort handed in by Brownwood quarterback Graylon Brown during a 49-16 win over Stephenville on Friday was far from the best ever at Gordon Wood Stadium.

But at the Class 3A level, it seldom gets more efficient, making Brown the hands-down winner for Big Country Player of the Week.

In the process of hitting 21 of 33 passes for 326 yards and six touchdowns, Brown guided a 35-point Brownwood explosion in the second half to keep the top-ranked Lions unbeaten at 3-0.

Perhaps most importantly, he did not have a turnover against his team’s archrival — even while hitting eight different receivers.

Wide receiver Jaxon Shipley was on the receiving end of four of Brown’s second-half touchdown passes. Derek Longoria caught the fifth — racing 51 yards on a screen pass for a score in the third quarter.

The performance provided a measure of atonement for Brown, who broke his leg in a 35-0 loss to Stephenville last year.

“It’s not like this was against a weak sister,” Brownwood coach Bob Shipley said. “(Stephenville) is a team that has been in the Top 10 this year in 4A — not to mention the rivalry and what was at stake.

“When you look at it in those terms, it was an incredible performance.”
