White Oak football team forfeits two wins after ineligible player discovered

White Oak Independent School District Superintendent Mike Gilbert informed the Longview News-Journal on Monday that White Oak’s football team will forfeit wins over Frankston and West Rusk due to the use of an ineligible player in those games.
Gilbert sent a letter to the superintendents at Frankston and West Rusk, and also to District 9-2A chairman Tatum and to the University Interscholastic League to inform the schools that White Oak would forfeit a 37-30 win over Frankston and a 42-41 win over West Rusk.
The ineligible player did not participate in the game this past Friday, a 40-35 loss to Spring Hill.
Gilbert said head coach Tracy Blankenship discovered information this past Friday about the ineligible player.
The player started the ninth grade in the fall of 2006 at another school district. From 2006 to now, the player has attended several schools. Gilbert said White Oak checked his age and residency before completing his PAPF (Previous Athletic Participation Form), and the determination that he was eligible to participate was based on that information. The fact he was actually in his fifth year of high school did not surface until Friday, Sept. 10.
''We found the error, reported it to both schools involved, to Tatum the District 9-2A chair and also to Mr. Ed Stidham, Director of Compliance at the University Interscholastic League,’’ Gilbert said. ''Rumors have been going around that the player was 20, and it’s not true. He met the age requirements and met residency requirements, but this administration overlooked the fact he started school early and was a fifth-year senior.’’
Gilbert’s said that White Oak ISD understands that allowing an ineligible player to participate in a UIL event is a violation of the UIL Constitution and Contest Rules and that White Oak is fully prepared to comply with the UIL code that calls for the forfeiture of the two contests in question.
He added that White Oak ISD and the athletic department take full responsibility for this oversight and have voluntarily provided this information to the two opponents involved, the 9-2A Football District Chairman (Dr. Dee Hart of Tatum) and Mr. Ed Stidham, Director of Compliance at the University Interscholastic League.
White Oak’s record will now be 0-3 heading into a road contest on Friday at Redwater.
