my fiance's granny was cleaning out her house because she is moving and she gave my fiance a rifle that belonged to her (grandmas) dad, so my fiance's great-grandfather - she (the granny) says it is a japanese ww2 rifle...

don't know much about it except it looks really old and all of the writing that is inscribed is in japanese...

i don't have any pics of the actual rifle but i found these and the one i have has the same characteristics from the sight to the ass end that is metal and not wood...

any thoughts on its significance or value??

lol - thats the first thing kyle said to do, but the trip to vegas would probably cost more than what the gun is worth....

you would think it would be worth something, maybe 100 bucks? i have no idea.....

Jason,

If you think the pictures show what you have, then that is most likely a Japanese made Arisaka Type 99. Made from '39 to '45. The later the year of the war, the cheaper they made them.

If you can get a picture of the breech markings, we can tell you a lot more about it. Also of interest, is there a flower engraved on the breech? If so, look and see if it has been defaced or removed. If not, the value goes up.

If it is in good condition, call it 80% or better, and NOT sporterized, you are looking at $200. The price would go up a bit depending on condition and collectibility.

Any idea where it came from? Would love to hear more about it.

could you post the barrel end and entire gun. Japanese guns were very long and that did not change till very late in the war. It does look old enough and those sites also fit the bill.

thinking of doing some hunting, which is a sport, but dont know if this gun, which was passed down to my fiance from her great grand father who apparently fought in ww2, would be appropriate....

Atta boy. Way to beat the system. Looks like a really nice hunting weapon. Pretty neat scope.

I think that is fine gun for critter hunting and such. However, being that it was a Japanese WWII gun, it could be worth some money. Maybe somebody on here would know.

BEAST possibly, but this thread is focusing on hunting as a sport, not me gathering information or trying to find out how much it could be worth so we can sell it and help pay for our wedding even though it might only be worth something in the $100 - $200 range....possibly.....

Take it to Vegas, sell it at Pawn Stars, and then blow the money gambling.
I bet it's worth more than 200. Hell I would give you 200 for it.

If NASCAR ain't a sport... Huntin ain't a sport!!!:D :D But I agree! Take it to Pawn Stars and see if it's authentic. You may get on tv and maybe a good payday.:D

Type 99 Arisaka 7.7mm. That sight is the Anti-aircraft sight. You can use it for hunting but it is not advisable. The Ammo is very expensive if you can find it and beings though it has the correct markings it is worth about $400 on the Militaria collectors market.

Hopefully it was never fired and only dropped once
