McALLEN — Los Fresnos defensive lineman Ramiro Flores walked over to a soaking-wet Falcons coach Clint Finley with a huge grin on his face.

"Give me a hug coach," Flores demanded. The 33-year-old coach obliged. The Los Fresnos players were happy for Finley, who notched his first win as a head coach after his team beat McAllen Rowe 17-14 on Friday at McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium.

"It feels really good," said Finley, who had water dumped on him after the game by his team. "It feels good getting the win with these boys. They work their tail off. They could have given up after the first two weeks. They stuck with it."

The Falcons (1-2) lost back-to-back games to start the season. A Jesus Galvan 58-yard touchdown return on a Rowe fumble gave the visitors a 14-6 lead with 5:04 left in the third quarter .

"We are all excited," Galvan said after the victory. "We are all pumped."

Warriors quarterback Danny Navarro threw a lateral that was near the line of scrimmage, but Issac Govea did not catch it, allowing Galvan to pick up the ball.

Rowe coach Paul Reyes, who is still looking for his first win as a head coach, argued that it was not a lateral.

"That wasn’t a turnover," Reyes said. "It wasn’t a lateral pass. I was right on the sideline. But hey, (the ref) called it. It is what it is. We have to live with it."

Whether it was a lateral or not, the Warriors (0-3) still struggled when they got inside Falcons territory. During the first half, two trips inside the 20 resulted in only six points.

The Warriors finally scored a TD on a 3-yard run by Govea with 3:26 left in the game. Josh Gatling’s run for a 2-point conversion after the score brought the Warriors to within 17-14.

Gatling replaced Navarro (125 yards rushing) late in the game after Navarro limped off the field. Gatling, with Rowe in Los Fresnos territory again, had one last shot to at least get the Warriors in position to tie the game but the Warriors turned the ball over on downs.

"The boys stepped it up and got it done (in our territory)," Finley said. "We were able to put some pressure on them and keep them out of (the end zone)."
Robert Degollado’s 24-yard field goal with 11:21 left in the game was the difference in the game.
