SW finally home to face Lobos

There will be at least one similarity to last week when Sweetwater plays Levelland in its home opener Friday at the TSTC Sammy Baugh Classic, with the kickoff set for approximately 8 p.m.
Levelland has the same nickname — Lobos — as Monahans, with one slight exception. Levelland, unlike Monahans, doesn’t have an “e” in its nickname.
Otherwise, there are few similarities between the schools other than the fact that they both compete in a West Texas Class 3A district, and that’s a good thing for Sweetwater.
Levelland is 0-2, and hasn’t looked good in either game. The Lobos lost to Amarillo Caprock 53-16 and fell to Dumas, 41-0, last week, and they are coming off a 1-9 season under a first-year head coach.
Sound familiar? But Sweetwater’s Craig Slaughter knows his Mustangs, 1-1 after losing to Monahans 35-7, can’t afford to take these Lobos lightly. “We’ve got to prove ourselves again and get the ship righted,” he said. “I anticipate a good crowd, especially with some people staying from the Clyde-Snyder game.
“We need to consistently move the football. We did it against Vernon and we need to do it again here. I want us to perform to a higher standard this week.”
Most of Levelland’s offense will be based out of the spread formation, Slaughter said. “They have some good athletes. They are very capable of doing some things even though they’ve struggled at times,” he said. “But if we can get the snowball rolling early that having our home crowd supporting us will really work in our favor, because the people here really support Sweetwater football.
“We all went into last week’s game against Monahans with high expectations and we’re disappointed,” he head coach admitted.
“We’re not disappointed so much with us losing the game, but for the way we performed.”
Playing the second game of a Friday doubleheader at the TSTC Sammy Baugh Classic will be a “unique” experience, Slaughter said. “That will be a different element. But our kids, more than anything, are glad to be home,” he said.
“They know that this will be an opportunity to get ourselves on a roll because we’ve got four of our next five games at home.”

For what it's worth, Massey's had us picked to beat Vernon 27-17, lose to Monahans by 3 or 4 TD's and now has us picked to beat Levelland 31-11. Here's hoping the get this one right too.

Levelland's terrible. Sweetwater should win by 4 or 5 touchdowns. If it's a close game, could be another long year for the mustangs
