MARYVILLE, Mo. — The Texas A&M-Kingsville defense dominated the defending Division II national champions holding Northwest Missouri State to less than 200 yards total offense as the Javelinas opened the 2010 season with a 16-7 win on the road.

Matt Romig had three of the Javelinas' seven sacks and Northwest Missouri State was able to score only a first-quarter touchdown in the game.

In his first start, Javs quarterback Nate Poppell threw for one touchdown and ran for another. Poppell complete 26 of 38 passes for 258 yards and no interceptions. Running back Fred Winborn, who led the Lone Star Conference in rushing yards in 2009, got off to a strong start in 2010, grinding out 82 yards on 27 carries and also catching a 26-yard scoring pass from Poppell with 3:32 left in the second quarter. The touchdown put the Javelinas ahead for good at 10-7.

Go Javs!

Isn't this just the second home loss for NWM State in just the last few years?
If TAMUK stays healthy who knows what they can do?
Also, go Daniel Ramirez!
I'm sure he played tonight.

He might've played but he wasn't the starter at QB...Nate Poppell from Spring got the nod.

He didn't play. The preseason writeup mentioned that Daniel would definitely play this season, but not last night.

Poppell was 26-38 for 254 yds and 1 TD, plus he had a rushing TD too. It might be hard for Ramirez to get PT at least at QB.

"We should've beat them," said Carthel. I didn't read the story on the Amarillo Globe-News (or whater it's called now!) website, but did see last night that they threw 4 or 5 interceptions.

Cool...I knew that SportSouth was showing the game but I don't have that channel on my lineup. Nice to see the LSC standing toe to toe with the big boys early on...
