This is gonna be a VERY tough one for my Stangs. Friendswood has been to the Qtr finals for 2 or 3 years in a row in 4A and have their "all everything" QB (Maetzold) back this year.

I agree this will be the toughest regular season game of the year for us.... despite the hype with Kirbyville. Silsbee and Jasper will be tough too.
WO-S is undefeated against Friendswood and Kirbyville all-time and has a major winning record against Silsbee and Jasper all-time so I'm optimistic.

Friendswood will demolish us from the sound of others.... we might as well not even play the game. We've never beaten a 4A #8 ranked team....
Oh wait... yes we have... we've beaten a 5A #1 ranked team actually as a 4A (we're the only program ever that can tout that actually). I see it as a win-win situation for WO-S win or lose as long as we keep it close (win as I'm predicting).

Yeah, the FW fans think that we can't compete just because we are 3A. They have never played a 3A and are falling into that 3A/4A drop off quagmire. They don't know that there really isn't a drop off with the better teams.

i was at the friendswood - dayton game last year, ended 36 - 33 but dayton had to score twice in the 4th qtr to get it that close....maetzold threw for 3 tds and third and longs seem to come easy to him.....dayton had a good team, better than either coldspring or wos last year IMO......wos will have to play better than last year to beat friendswood with their qb returning.....friendswood appears to have a younger defensive line, so maybe they can be run on.....
am rooting for my adopted team from last year......go get 'em, stangs.......(not madisonville stangs, they're playing MY boys tonight, lol)......

hmmm.... Carthage and Gilmer and Giddings had interesting evenings as well it seems.... None of them played a top 10 4A team

No shame here. WOS will hang some points going forward. FW is solid in 4A and WOS bloodied them good in this one but fell short by a wee blond one.:cool:

M328, I know you watch a lot of HS football, but I knew going in you were off the mark here. From watching WO-S up close THIS year and being familiar with the style and play of Friendswood, I was convinced this would be no blowout. You can't simply go by popular opinion, rankings, and 7 on 7 play to predict these games. It's all about MATCH-UPS, and I knew WO-S matched up well against FW. WO-S was every bit as good as FW and had a legitimate chance of winning this game.

I like your description. WO-S was with FW blow-for-blow. FW is as good as advertised, but WO-S has made big strides in just three weeks. They're looking good. The rest of the season should be a fun ride.
First and foremost, you gotta give props to Maetzold. That dude is a stud and, man, we had him down by a couple of TD's and sacked him probably 6 times at least and that dude never got rattled... never got in a hurry and stayed cool the whole time. He is the real deal. I was impressed with FW and Maetzold. You can't put a price on a experienced, confident and poised QB. In the end, he was the difference.
As for the Stangs, you folks know that I am usually pretty objective about how they play. And I have never been one for moral victories. We have things that we still need to improve on and we have to get our kicker going. But, overall, I was proud of the way our boys fought. There is something different about this team that I am seeing. Not only can we line up and get 3-4 yards when we need it on the ground, our 3rd down percentage has to be phenominal. Where, in years past you would be kind of nervous on 3rd and 5. This year I feel pretty certain about us picking up 10 yards in on 3rd down. We punted 3 times last night against FW which is pretty impressive to me.
The O- line is big and block very well. We sacked them 6 times last night. They did not get to us once.

all i know is this is addedincentive to beat cleveland and take district this year......let cleveland face this years version of the mustangs......:D :D :D

I did forget Silsbee... good luck to them. They've beaten us 3 times ever in 34 years. Never by more than 6 pts. (and consider that a throw down if you want but *yawn*)

doubtless our days of sneaking upon you guys anymore are over.....cleveland appears to be off this year.....

We're pretty much guaranteed to go D2
Silsbee and BC have larger enrollments and both are looking good so far... not to jinx... none of us have qualified for the playoffs yet

sure wish we had the last minute of the lorena game back....would have loved to have seen qb allen against that carthage bunch, i think we got caught looking past them....
most don't know, but the game ended with us on the 1 yard line, same way the first half ended, either one would have put us thru.......oh well......
I don't know about Silsbee being for the district title or not. I am impressed with how Bridge City has been playing. They have been beating people pretty soundly.

i know the cardinals have a great history.....they just seemed to have fallen SO far in the last few years i thought they'd be like us and take a few years getting back to the top.....maybe your right.....
Their QB (Menard) is a stud running and throwing.
