My thought process is 7 on 7 is 7 on 7. 11 on 11 is 11 on 11. So much more to the game than touch football on a short field. Your logic said that if you almost beat us in 7 on 7, you could hang. But that is really not accurate. You have to block and tackle and defend with pads on and also you have to stop Mr. Shipley on the Punt Returns. :)

Congrats to the Lions! I'd like to hear a breakdown of Brownwood's performance from someone who was at the game? I listened to it off and on. LOTS of penalties. Was it just typical firist game stuff? Someone realistic tell me how you felt about how the Lions looked on both sides of the ball. Shipley is ridiculous....his impact is a given. Tell me what you thought....

The negative first. Brownwood struggled with it's passing game at times. Brown seemed to have some timing issues with Shipley. Also, we had way too many penalties. Some were your standard false starts but we also had at least three pass interference calls although one was questionable.

Now for the positive. Brownwood scored in almost every way possible. Punt returns, interception returns, long pass plays, great runs. The defense also looks very good. Overall, very impressive performance. Gatesville has a very good quaterback.

To add though, Brownwood did well in 7 on 7 not just because of their athleticism, but also because of their strength and conditioning. There are lots of teams that can do well at 7 on 7 based only on athleticism, but when you have a group of athletes that have it all, you have yourself a special group that will achieve great things in 11 on 11.

We shot ourselves in the foot quite a bit tonight. It seemed at times there was some frustration between Graylon and Jaxon about the right route being run. Hopefully that gets fixed quick. The first drive we looked like a well oiled machine. Graylon was on target pass after pass. The next 2 or 3 drives some of his passes were off, but he recovered well later.

Our defense is awesome. Gatesville scored twice on our first D.... one was a 67 yard TD pass that we simply missed the tackle on in man to man coverage... the other was set up by a very questionable call on 3rd and long when Shipley broke up a pass and was called for a personal foul/face mask on the play that kept their drive going and moved them to our 20. Other than those two drives, our starting D was pretty darn good tonight. Gatesville will be a playoff team, they might even go 1 or 2 rounds. They were 7-4 last year and I believe I read they have 12 starters back... so they're not a bad team. They had quite a few turnovers tonight, but all but maybe 1 were forced turnovers.

Ok, i just got home, heres the skinny on the game. Brownwoods defense is very good. Fast, big and strong up front, most importantly smart. We will not give up many points this year. Special teams are very good. We have Jaxon and others returning kicks and punts. I think our O will have a lot of short fields because teams will stop kicking to us. Our offense was strange tonight. First drive we looked awesome. Then we just went into a funk. I know we didnt open up much on offense. We didnt utilize our rushing game at all except for the first drive of the second half. Our O line looked really solid. Our receivers are really good. Graylon tried to force some stuff tonight. First game back after a really long time. He settled down and got on track.

I admit I am a homer. But Ill tell you this, we will be a dominant team this year. We had a load of penalties tonight. Amazingly, they had almost none. Stuff like that always amazes me. Jaxon should have had 2 more Tds on long passes but he was getting mugged. No call. Thats fine. We are were we need to be. No where near where I thnk we will be. We did not work the middle of the field with our passing game at all. That, like the rushing attack, is one of our streghts. Plenty more to come.

Congrats BEAST! I listen to the game on-line. I understand, by what you posted, why Coach Shipley was not totally happy after the first half with the offense. If they would have been in sync it would have been uglier score.

I dont mind telling that I did not think we looked like a #1 ranked team last night . I think we can get there and fast but as lop sided as tonight was, we should have scored 70 in the first half. I think we were inside gatesvilles 30 3 other times and failed to score... in the 1st half.

Like others were saying, our first drive the offense looked incredible (except for the 3 penelties, it took us 85 yards to cover 60 yards). Graylon was spot on, on every throw. After that he and Jaxson looked like they were playing for different teams. That was kind of strange.

Defense looked very good. A couple of blow coverages and one call that I thought was crazy against us allowed 13 points against our starting D. Not great, but not bad.

As far as special teams all I can say is punt it out of bounds. Both of Jaxons punt returns looked like he was playing against jr high kids. If some had a video of them, I hope they are available soon to view. Absoultly crazy.

One more thing. Gatesville team is good but their QB IS A STUD ! He will play on saturdays somewhere. guy was a beast.

Penalties always seem to be an issue for teams early on. The problem for teams playing Brownwood is that we are always in scoring position, whether you give us the short field or not. I'd be willing to bet we will lose the time of possession battle in 75% of our games bc of our style of play and quick strike ability. Gatesville has a lot of upside this season and I wish them the best!

Being a #1 Ranked Team doesn't mean playing to perfection. It means winning. Those 2 Punt Return TD's and Pick 6 made up for the offense not being in sync. We didn't even HAVE to establish a Run Game. LOL We didn't turn the ball over. We utilized our weapons all over the field on offense, defense, and special teams. Gatesville was just lining up in pass defense the whole game, they didn't have to account for the run. We caused 5 Turnovers in the first half. IN ONE HALF.

This is something we aren't used to seeing in Brownwood. We usually rely on the offense HAVING to be in sync to win games and at that winning by no more than 14-21. What you saw tonight is Brownwood being able to score from any side of the ball in any situation. This is what a #1 Ranked Team can do. Shipley is talking about how bad our offense is playing while the scoreboard reads 42-13 at half. I understand where he is coming from, don't get me wrong, but the one factor we didn't get to see last night is 1, the adjustments we ALWAYS make on defense and 2, the running game. Don't worry L48, we are right where we need to be.

Folks, remember the offense Brownwood had in 2008? Well this offense is better and we have a STRONG defense... oh and throw in Shipley on Special Teams. The State Title is ours to lose. Come and get it, if you think you can...

I am not worried, actually I am very excited. Our 1st offense scored 28 points against what appeared to be a solid 3A team in just 2 1/2 quarters. I just saw some things I was not expecting to see from us. Lots of peneltys and miscommuncations between kids that I know will be great. Coach Shipley saw lots more than I even pretend to think I know. I feel good about him fixing those things. Graylon and Jaxon looked like they had never played together. I bet they fix that against Graham next week... poor Graham, jaxon had a break out game against them last year and now I expect he will do the same this year.


One other thing... that pass right before half time from Graylon to Chaistain was a 40 yard throw in the air, right on the money and in stride... one of the prettiest things I have ever seen.... besides my grandbaby .

Oh I know...my point is that they really didn't get a chance to get in sync in the 2nd half. it didn't matter. LOL I think we would have. Chastain's TD showed some promise there.

The wife and I were on our way to use the restroom before it got packed at halftime just before that play happened. We decided to stand by the fence in that back corner of the endzone looking down the field as Chastain came towards us. You could see the ball hit him perfectly in stride and the DB from Gatesville several yards behind him. Was pretty awesome to view from that angle. Brownwoodnews.com has a pretty good pic of it as well if you look through all of the pictures from last night.
