Ready or not, football is here!

By RODNEY WHITE
Despite the hot weather, two-a-days have started for high school football players. The team reported Monday morning for their first practice from 8:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. The varsity will continue to practice from 5:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. every day also, while the freshmen team started Tuesday. Coach Young said he is looking forward to a great year with continued good community support. Every year the team sets new goals, and this year the goals are to make the playoffs for the fifth year in a row, to win the district championship, and to be playing football in December.
The Wolves have a new player that moved in this summer. Casey Devries moved to Dalhart from Kansas and is looking to try out for the tight end position and 3 technique. The team looks to be strong this year on offense with last year’s quarterback, Noah Jesko, returning to lead the Wolf Pack. He will be backed up by Adrian Ruiz and Davonte Burks, both returning from last year, which should give the Wolves one of the most experienced backfields in the district. The Wolves are also returning a strong nucleus on the offensive line with Gary Silacci, Juan Delgado, Cameron Ford and Harper Scofield ready for action. The Wolves still intend to run the spread this year, but will likely run the ball more this year with such great talent in the backfield.
As usual, Coach Young plans to build his team around the defense. The Wolves have eight returning lettermen on defense. Coach Young is looking for some leadership from linebacker Tyler Smith, and in the secondary, the safety will be Davonte Burks. The public will have an opportunity to see the Wolves when they host their first scrimmage here at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 14. The Wolves will scrimmage Stratford with the JV starting first, followed by the Varsity. When asked what the rest of the district will look like this year, Coach Young said Perryton is always a rivalry, and they do not like to lose to Dalhart. Borger is returning a great Junior class, and they are playing with a lot of confidence. Pampa is an unknown as they move down from 4A into our district. They have a good new coach in Heath Parker, and the Harvesters made the playoffs last year.
Coach Young said his door is always open if you need to see him and this should be a fun year. The Wolves were lucky to keep basically the same staff from last year, with Aaron Witten returning to coach the receivers and Jared Brock will lead the linebackers. Joey Read will remain the offensive coordinator and the offensive line coach. Josh Young will coach the secondary and Oscar Murga the defensive tackles. Ryan Jackson will be coaching the quarterbacks and runningbacks. Trevor Scott will coach the outside linebackers and the defensive ends. Allen Marrow will be on the offensive line.
