Gilmer is the birthplace of Johnny Mathis, Freddie King and Don Henley.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnny_Mathis#Early_life

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freddie_King

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don_Henley

Henley was just born here because his doctor was from here. He grew up in Linden (which is halfway between here and Texarkana) and I happen to know he didn't much care for high school football and was in the Linden-Kildare band instead, which makes sense. You'll never guess what he played. Or maybe you will if you've ever heard of the Eagles.

I heard about his distaste for football when Linden-Kildare's star QB of that era, Edd Hargett (who later quarterbacked Texas A&M to an SWC title in 1967 and had a brief NFL career with the Saints, IIRC), decided to run for Congress from this area in the mid-1980s. Henley gave a LOT of money to his Dem opponent, Jim Chapman, who won.

L48, I sure wouldn't arm wrestle you over it but I think Fess Parker was from Zephyr. I will add 2 names to your famous people from the Brownwood area. Katherine Anne Porter was born, raised and buried at Indian Creek (just outside Brownwood). She didn not live her adult life there and was a part of the Greenwich Village artist society of the early 1900's and later won a Pulitzer Prize. The other name that I will add is Robert E. Howard. He was raised between Brownwood and Cross Plains and was the creator of Conan the Barbarian.

That's right, and his little brother (cant remember his first name) was coaching at Brownwood Jr High while Wilber was playing for the Eagles. He played a little pro ball but did not have near the sucess as his brother... also he was not the best coach, got in a little trouble while coaching here.

The number of artists to have come out of Sweetwater is slim. It might or might not include Starday hillbilly Buddy Shaw ("Don't Sweep That Dirt On Me", "No More"... both high on the Westex want list). But the short list definitely includes the prolific Elmer Ray Doggett and Royce Porter.

Like so many other kids Royce Porter tuned in to the Louisiana Hayride Saturday after Saturday to get an earful of Elvis. In June of 1955 Elvis played his first and only gig in the town of Sweetwater and I have little doubt that Royce and his buddy Ray were both there, mesmerized by the greasy headed kid from Memphis. And not too long after graduating high school, inspired by the success of the new star Louisiana Hayride the pair of Sweetwater boys lit out for the Houston area where they quickly got caught up with the infamous Bennie Hess. Doggett cut a couple of singles for Bennie's new rock n' roll label Spade, debuting in 1956 with the rocker "Go Go Heart". Royce followed a few months later with the moody hiccupin' shuffler "A Woman Can Make You Blue". It was while touring Texas radio stations and promoting their own Spade releases that they met Mr. Pappy Dailey of Starday records.

Since the 70s Royce Porter has racked up a nice string of hits for himself. Most famous of the bunch is the huge 80s classic "Ocean Front Property", on which Porter carries a third of the songwriting. Thirty-three percent of a George Strait tune is a nice chunka change.

When he was 16, the family then moved to Sweetwater, Texas,[2] and he attended Sweetwater High School.[4] As the quarterback of his high school football team(Sweetwater Mustangs), he would practice for hours throwing a football through a swinging automobile tire, often on the run.[2] But apparently, Baugh would practice punting more than throwing.

However, this isn’t entirely accurate. Until 1969 or so, when the new one was built, the high school at Sweetwater was named Newman High School, I think it was named in honor of one of the prominent founders of the city. We still have a Newman Park in Sweetwater. All of our schools were named after people back in the day. Sure sounded better than Middle School, Intermediate School, etc…

DON Henley is a disgrace as a Texan. He is an ass, pure and simple. My sister lived next to him in Malibu (and he may STILL be her neighbor now, I havent asked in years). I could pass along personal stories of why I say this, but its all anecdotal anyways. But my opinion is firm on this...love the Eagles, but I would punch that liberal flapping gum right in the choppers if given the chance.

But my opinion is firm on this...love the Eagles, but I would punch that liberal flapping gum right in the choppers if given the chance.
Don Henley was only BORN in Gilmer. He was raised in Linden. If he would've been raised in Gilmer we would've had him straightened out.;) I don't care for him, either, as a person. Celebrities in general tend to be weirdos, wackos, and nut jobs anyway. Must be something in the air out there in Californica.:D

In case you didn't know, I'm pretty much a big deal in Gilmer.

I could pass along personal stories of why I say this, but its all anecdotal anyways. But my opinion is firm on this...love the Eagles, but I would punch that liberal flapping gum right in the choppers if given the chance. He's not that bad is he:eek:  lol

I almost went to a benefit concert he was holding in Linden a couple of years ago... It sounded good until they got to ticket price ...1000 freakin dollars!!!!

He is not the same guy he was in Linden, but he is not all bad either he does give back some to his hometown and still has some family there. He supports "Music City Texas" and the Linden Courthouse restoration project.

He is not "my kind of people" but Ellen Degenerate isn't either... The main difference is Henly gives back some and Ellen doesn't.

Gonzales has Jerry Hall, model/actress married to Mick Jagger. Born in Gonzales, but eventually move to Mesquite. She has been seen from time to time at the local HEB when she's in town visiting family usually around the holidays..
