Leopards Spoil Burk's Homecoming 40-7

For anyone who thinks time of possession is a meaningful stat in
football, I give you Friday's Gainesville Leopards game with Burkburnett
as proof it isn't.
The Bulldogs controlled the clock and ran 68 offensive plays to just 33
for Gainesville. But the Leopards took better advantage of the times
they had the ball, scoring on 6 of their 11 possessions in the game en
route to an easy 40-7 win over the Bulldogs on Burk's Homecoming.
Gainesville (4-0) only ran 12 offensive plays in the first half, but
still led 20-7 at halftime. They had first half touchdown drives of 1
play, 2 plays and 1 play.
Neither team scored in the first 9 minutes of the game, but Gainesville
managed to get on the scoreboard first. After the GHS defense forced a
short Burk punt, Gainesville took over at the Bulldog 48-yard line. On
the first offensive play, Terrius Purvey took a handoff, fumbled it, but
scooped it back up and ran 48 yards for a touchdown. Steven Arenas added
the extra point to put the Leopards up 7-0.
The Gainesville defense held Burk without a first down on their next
possession as well and forced another punt. Amos Berryman returned the
punt 20 yards and was grabbed by the facemask on the tackle. The 15-yard
penalty gave the Leopards the ball at the Burk 14.
GHS quarterback Chris Brown then hit Courtney Royal with a 12-yard pass
down to the 2. From there, Purvey took it in on the next play. The extra
point kick was blocked and the Leopards led 13-0 as time expired in the
first quarter.
The Bulldogs (3-1) got their only points on a long scoring drive. Burk
used 14 plays to go 67 yards. Most of it was on the ground, although
quarterback Casey Copeland hit Casey McCleskey on a 20-yard pass on
third and seven to keep the drive alive. William Gates went the final 5
yards on a run and the extra point brought Burk with 13-7 with just 3:50
remaining in the half.
Jerome Hewitt set up the Leopards in goof field position with a 30-yard
kickoff return to near midfield, but Gainesville was forced to punt,
which ended up working out well for the Leopards as a Burk player
fumbled the punt and Gainesville's Aron Berryman pounced on it at the
3-yard line.
On the next play, Purvey scored to put GHS ahead 19-7. Gainesville made
their two-point conversion, but a holding penalty wiped it out. They
settled for another Arenas extra point to go up 20-7 with just over a
minute in the half.
The Bulldogs kicked off to begin the second half and took a chance with
an onside kick, but the kick went out of bounds and Gainesville took
over at the Burk 48. On second down, Brown rolled out to his left and
hit Darcel McBath with a 47-yard TD pass to push the GHS lead to 26-7
just 47 seconds into the third quarter.
Burk managed to get a few first downs on their next two possessions, but
the first was stopped by an Amos Berryman sack. The second ended when
Gainesville's Shawn Thomas recovered a Burk fumble.
It took the Leopards just three plays to go 60 yards. The Gainesville
offensive line blew Burk off the ball on three-straight plays as Purvey
ran 10 yards on first down, 41 on the second play, and capped it off
with a 9-yard TD run. Arenas' kick made it 33-7.
At the end of the third quarter, the Leopards defense forced another
Burk punt and the Leopards took over at their own 48. After three plays
netted just 3 yards, the Leopards lined up to punt, but the direct snap
went to Brown who scampered 41 yards down to the 8. Hewitt scored on the
next play and Arenas added the extra point to make it 40-7.
Gainesville looked as if they might score again in the fourth quarter.
The Bulldogs had to punt once again, and Amos Berryman returned it 30
yards to the Burk 30. But the Leopards couldn't get a first down and a
50-yard field goal by Arenas went just right.
Even some members of the Gainesville second team defense got into the
act in the final period. Sophomore Michael Miller had a big hit and a
tackle for a loss.
Amos Berryman led the GHS defense with 8 tackles and 2 sacks. Jeremy
Franklin added 6 tackles and Dylan Buck had 2 sacks. Shawn Thomas had
several tackles and recovered a fumble. Chase Beam, Cody Brewer, McBath,
Greg Mack, Nick Daulong, Clint Stoffels and Colt Eberhart were all in on
tackles as well.
Offensively, Purvey had 143 yards rushing on just 13 carries. Brown
added 47 yards on the ground and threw for 58 more. McBath was the
leading receiver with 51 yards on two catches.
Gates led Burk with 28 carries for 123 yards. Copeland threw for 98
yards.
Gainesville will be back home Friday for Homecoming against Bridgeport.

If you beat a team by 33 points, of course time of posession isn't going to matter... However.com, if you're in a close game, managing the clock can have a great effect on the outcome...
