BALTIMORE (AP) - The Baltimore Orioles reinforced their weary bullpen by activating Robstown High School grad Mike Gonzalez from the disabled list and recalling former Corpus Christi Hooks left-hander Troy Patton from Triple-A Norfolk.

A series of short outings by Baltimore starters and a 13-inning game Tuesday led to the moves, which were announced before Wednesday's game against Tampa Bay.

Signed during the offseason to be Baltimore's closer, Gonzalez was placed on the disabled list on April 10 with a strained left shoulder. He had blown two save opportunities in three chances.

Patton was 6-9 with a 4.91 ERA in 18 starts with Norfolk. He has not played in the majors since 2007.

Patton was 6-6 with 68 strikeouts in 16 appearances for Corpus Christi that year and was named a Texas League All-Star before a brief call-up to the Astros. He was then traded in December along with four other players for Miguel Tejada, but sat out the entire 2008 season after having surgery to repair a torn labrum.

The Orioles optioned third baseman Josh Bell to Norfolk and moved pitcher Jim Johnson to the 60-day disabled list.
