Meeting for officials begins next Monday (at least in Central Texas). If you are interested go to a meeting. If you know someone that is interested, call them and let them know.

If you don't want to be an official then do something for me. Get a rule book and read it. In fact, just read the situation section. You will be amazed at all the stuff that can happen in a game and the amount of stuff that you may not know. You can also find the book on the NCAA web site and the UIL exceptions on the UIL web site.

When the season starts and you are yelling at the officials please remember that they have been working for months preparing and they are doing this for the love of the game.

Good luck to you and your chapter. We only have 18 new members this year. We were hoping for more. We did have a couple more but they have already dropped out after seeing the dedication and time commitment that you have to have. One guy was upset that the first meeting lasted over an hour. It was no loss to us because we only want the most dedicated people we can find and those who are willing to commit. We'll be lucky if 5 of those 18 come back next year. The sad part about not getting enough officials is that we have had to turn a team away because we would not be able to cover their games. This will continue to be the trend across the state if this statewide shortage doesn't take a turn in our favor. More and more schools are going to be turned away if it doesn't change soon.

They appear to be buying into the new coach. I've been running at the track and seen a lot of players doing their summer workouts. There have been more this year than in previous years. One thing is sure, they should be in good conditioning before football practices start. That will help them because the coaches can concentrate more on getting the new fast paced system in place instead of having to worry about conditioning all that much.

And I have been practicing for 47 years by watching thousands of games in person and 1,000's of hours of games on TV.. That is a lot of work and revenue invested in preparing and I do this for the for the love of the game....

Rules are merely suggestions.
