UIL: Adding Class 6A 'more likely than ever'

SAN ANTONIO — The University Interscholastic League is again floating the possibility of creating a Class 6A.

UIL Executive Director Charles Breithaupt said Monday "it's more likely now than ever" that the 1,200 high schools playing football in Texas might be realigned into six classes of roughly equal sizes.

Under the proposal, four schools from every district in every classification would make the playoffs. Class 5A and 4A districts are currently the only ones to advance four teams from each district.

Breithaupt said the proposal is one of several that school districts will be surveyed about this fall.

Breithaupt said the plan differs from previous calls to create a "superconference" of the 100 or so biggest high schools in the state.

I actually thought the 6A plan was gonna be nixed in favor of the format they used for 1A, and instill it in 2A-5A, end up with 10 separate classifications.

I'm all for the 6A. But if they are going to allow 4 teams into the playoffs they might as well go ahead and let every team into the playoffs because I promise you that is the way it will end up whether you finish the season 10-0 or 0-10. It will eventually happen.

As opposed to "unifying the title" with a DI vs. DII play off game, they want to add another school from each district? Really????

UIL takes 15% of the take from every playoff game. Any wonder why they want more playoff games????

Sounds familiar doesn't it TexMike? Sounds a lot like TASO vs UIL!

Still amazes me all the football fans who want LESS play off games..dont give me that water down crap..If your good enough you will advance into the next round..simple as that no matter the record.

I personally want as much play off football as I can get!

There will never be more than four teams per district because to have more means either 1) extending the playoffs past Christmas or 2) shortening the regular season by a game. Neither will happen.

I'm cool with a 6A because there are now enough schools in Texas to support it. It's probably more to the benefit of the small 5As than it is the 3As, but I'm in favor of more equitable competition on all levels.

I agree with you TXB.

Non-competitive playoff HS football is about as fun to watch as paint drying. Kind of like all those lower tier college bowl games.

There also has to be a point of diminishing returns. At some point, these third and forth place teams have NO chance to win and the attendence on both sides will suffer. One way to fix this is to make the first two rounds home games for the team with the best record. This would increase the attendance.

The big winners are the UIL and the officials (and maybe the RARE 2-8 team that goes on a wild winning streak and wins state with a 7 -8 record).

To many 3rd place and 4th place teams have made deep runs to say they have no chance of winning

I said that there is the rare team that is the exception. I am betting that the third place team is around 2 out of 10 that go more than 2 deep. The forth place teams will probably be more like 1 in 25.

Without researching it tell me what Bandera's record was when they won state. It really doesn't matter does it does it. They won the State Championship, that's all that matters.

IF the 6A proposal comes to pass, does anyone have any idea what it will do to the other classifications? Where would each start and stop in regards to enrollment?

6a would be great as long as they scrap the split classification mess. To split the classes is stupid. As someone said earlier its all about money. The UIL can make more money from having 2 state championship football games in each class than by having just 1. In other sports the dollar figure isnt worth their effort so they dont split them.

Put me in the TXB camp. What could be wrong with having more games to watch, with the best coming to the top?
I would like to see seeding, however, to keep some of the better teams from knocking each other out too early.

A lot more third and 4th place teams do well than one would think...especially in the larger classes...there's a few every year

If all the classes go to 4 playoff teams and there is a 6a classification I would want the Division I champion to play the division II champion so that way we will have an outright state champion. Instead of having 12 state champions only have 6!

SAN ANTONIO — College football coaches aren’t the only ones on the River Walk fielding questions about superconferences.

High school football coaches attending the Texas High School Coaches Association convention got to join in the fun Tuesday, a day after University Interscholastic League executive director Charles Breithaupt again raised the possibility the state’s high schools may split into six conferences, or classifications.

A Class 6A, which has been a topic of discussion almost since the UIL created Class 5A in 1980, brings to mind enrollment giants like the Planos, North Shores and Odessas of the state. More than 11,000 students attend Plano and Plano East high schools.

But a mock Class 6A alignment produced by the Chronicle illustrates what Breithaupt contends: The biggest changes will come at the lower levels.

"The schools that would be the most affected are the lower classes," Breithaupt said. "If you are looking at putting 200-225 schools in each classification, the schools with enrollments from 450 to about 900 would have the biggest changes."

In the Chronicle’s mock 6A, produced using 2010-12 enrollment guidelines, only 10 current Class 5A schools from the Houston area wouldn’t have the enrollment necessary to qualify for 6A.

Breithaupt said a survey that includes questions about adding a sixth conference will go out to superintendents and athletic directors in August. The findings of the survey will be discussed by the UIL Legislative Council in mid-October.

The council, which is made up of 28 public school administrators from across the state, will take the survey results into consideration but will make the ultimate decision. The final decision on how many classifications the UIL will have for the 2012 reclassification and realignment will be released in January 2011, Breithaupt said.

Breithaupt and UIL director of athletics Cliff Odenwald say a sixth classification would provide more balance. Currently in Class A, 382 schools play basketball, while football is split into six-man and 11-man. There are 229 Class 2A schools, 190 in 3A, 246 in 4A and 245 in 5A.

While a school like Katy, with an enrollment of 2,794, would likely see few changes initially if a Class 6A were created, Katy football coach Gary Joseph said any school district with multiple schools — like Katy ISD, which currently has six — could be impacted eventually.

"When you have six or seven schools sharing one stadium, and then those schools are in different districts, scheduling would become a nightmare," he said. "And it would be extra travel, having to go across the city of Houston when we have teams in our neighborhood."

The Fort Bend school district, which will open its 11th school, Ridge Point, this year, would face those issues. Fort Bend ISD athletic director Keith Kilgore said he sees the UIL eventually going to a six-classification alignment. But he doesn’t think it will be for the 2012-14 realignment.

"In our district, we have had a couple of schools opt up in the last realignment, but now that we have 11, we won’t do that anymore," he said. "With 11 schools, we won’t have any school with an enrollment more than 2,500."

For Clear Creek ISD athletic director Bill Daws, the outcome doesn’t matter as long as he can fit it into the budget.

"You look across this state and athletic department budgets are being slashed all over the place," he said. "Travel is our expense; so are officials. If we can’t have a district game with two of our schools at our stadium, it starts to add up. That is the priority for a lot of athletic directors — making it work economically."

Daws said other sports have to be considered as well.

"We have been lucky because our travel hasn’t been bad," he said. "When you have two basketball games or two baseball games a week, you have to think about how far the kids have to get on a Tuesday night, a school night."

Clements football coach Keith Knowles said he hopes things stay the same. In the meantime, all he can do is coach his team.

"I like the way things are," he said. "But it isn’t something coaches sit around and think about too much. Whatever happens, wherever we end up, we have to play the game. Coaches from all sports just focus on that."

The article said schools with enrollment of 450 - 900 would have the biggest changes but it didnt say what those changes might be. That enrollment range hits pretty much all of 3A. (Except Wylie who has 1500:D ) I would really like to know what those changes would be.

Using last years numbers it could look something like this:
6A 2225-6200 200 schools
5A 1395-2224 200 schools
4A 600-1400 200 schools
3A 285-600 200 schools
2A 145-285 200 schools
1A 145 down 206 schools

This is not the EXACT numbers, but its pretty close

Until they quit making schools with 6000 students, its going to be tough to make it fair for all. Why they would make schools with more than 4000 is beyond me.

Based on those projections, Brownwod would be a small to midsize 4A school. What about the rest of yall.

One thing to remember is that the large ISDs that artificially "bump" some of their schools up throws a big wrench in this. I know that Houston and Fort Bend ISDs have many schools that would be 3, 4, or 5A in this model. Currently, HISD has some schools playing 5a with 3a numbers and then wonders why they cant win. Until these districts allow their schools to be placed into the appropriate level or the UIL disallows bumping up, the model will continue to be skewed.

With the new numbers would there be only one state champion?

XMan

How will you react if your team goes 4a or 2a? Hopefully the UIL will just go with 6 football champs instead of a split system. I think the split system they have with 1 and 2a this year is better than the post season split.

LE Dad
07-22-2010, 01:29 PM
That would be a big change in Texarkana. T High up to 5A LE up to 4A and PG staying 3A. LE travel will increase most likely district LE,Paris, North Lamar, Mt. Pleasant, Sulphur Springs, Greenville. Nasically doubling travel.

hollywood

This could create some really good super districts.

Based on current enrollment #'s, imagine this probable 4A scenario:
EVERMAN 1239
STEPHENVILLE 1033
SPRINGTOWN 1030
MINERAL WELLS 961
ABILINE WYLIE 940
BROWNWOOD 877
GRAHAM 732
GLEN ROSE 518

5A 1395-2224 200 schools

3A 285-600 200 schools
2A 145-285 200 schools
1A 145 down 206 schools

This is not the EXACT numbers, but its pretty close

Until they quit making schools with 6000 students, its going to be tough to make it fair for all. Why they would make schools with more than 4000 is beyond me.

Somebody better register www.*********.com URL just in case!

I would guess 1A 100-190
2A 190-360
3A 360-700
4A 700-1300
5A 1300-2400
6A 2400 and up
This would insure noone is playing anyone over twice their size. Under 100 would be 6 man like it is now.

Probably not, but anything could happen when the UIL is involved. Heck, look at Stephenville's district the next 2 years.

Waco High
Waco Midway
Waco University
Killeen High
Then... San Angelo Lakeview???

Everman to Abilene - 155 miles - 2.5 hr drive

Stephenville to San Angelo - 155 miles - 2.5 hr drive
Killeen to San Angelo - 184 miles - 3 hr drive
Waco to San Angelo - 216 miles - 3.5 hr drive

Now who would have ever put a San Angelo team in with Stephenville, Waco and Killeen?
