FORT WORTH - Sweetwater's 9-10 year-old all-stars are also off to an impressive start after rallying from an early 3-1 deficit against Forney to win Wednesday's opening game of their Texas West Section 2 tournament in Fort Worth.
Kiante McCoy went 3-for-3 with a triple and double to pace an 11-hit attack for Sweetwater, which advances to today's second round game against Waco Midway that begins at 8 p.m. Today's winner advances to the sectional semifinals on Friday, while the loser plays an elimination game tomorrow.
Mason Maxwell, Christopher Thompson and Taiden Smith each had two hits and Kobe Clark and Jordan McGee one for Sweetwater, with Clark collecting a double. McGee and Maxwell each scored two runs and Smith, Thompson, McCoy, Clark and Ky Hoover also crossed home plate.
Each team scored a run in the first inning, but Sweetwater trailed 3-1 after Forney scored twice in the third inning. However, the All-Stars took charge of the contest with a six-run fourth inning that gave the team a 7-3 lead. Sweetwater increased its advantage to 10-3 with three more tallies in the fifth.
Meanwhile, the team used six pitchers in the six-inning contest. Isak Alvarez started on the mound and was replaced by Noah Martinez, McCoy, Maxwell, McGee and Clark, who threw just one pitch that ended the game.
