I had no idea some schools played flag football
COUPLAND ISD ADDS TACKLE FOOTBALL 2010-07-06
(COUPLAND) Coupland ISD has decided to add tackle football to the list of sports offered to students in 2010. Led by new head coach, Jeff Kirby, Coupland will shed its flag football for six-man football this fall.
To start the new program, Coupland needed a coach. The school district found one when Kirby, former Thrall head baseball coach, decided to accept the job and build a stronger sports program in Coupland.
Coupland expects to have 10-14 kids participate in the first season of football. The school district has been playing flag football for the past five or six years, but was losing some of the better athletes to schools like Taylor and Elgin because they didn’t offer tackle football.
Coupland has around 120 students from kindergarten to eighth grade. Students in sixth, seventh and eighth grade will be able to participate in the new tackle football program because of numbers.
Coupland’s first tackle football game will take place Sept. 9 and the schedule will include seven or eight games in the inarguable year.
