Though Lonesome Dove is not a movie (if it were, it would be #1 in my view), the movies suggested so far are far and away from what would be considered #1.

Rather than everyone simply posting their personal favorites and claiming them to be the best movies ever, simply look at the IMDB best RATED movies ever:
1. The Shawshank Redemption
2. The Godfather
3. The Godfather II
4. The Good, The bad and the Ugly.
5. Pulb Fiction
6. Toy Story 3
7. Schindlers List
8. 12 Angry Men
9. One flew over the cockoos Nest.
10. Star Wars: Episode V.
I really don't understand Toy Story 3 being in this list but I don't give the IMDB ratings. We could also base it on the highest rented movies, Most bought DVDs or any number of other ways.

Isn't is amazing that after 28 years ET is still this high on the all time money list? I don't remember for sure but I imagine that it only cost about $2.00 or $2.50 for admission as opposed to the $7, $8, or $9 that we routinely pay now.

Avatar is only up there because people paid an extra $3-$5 to see it in 3D and Imax.
I usually pay $5 to see a movie, for Avatar I paid $13.

I question several in the top 10 myself. Virginia City and Stagecoach??? Really? The Treasure of the Sierra Madra was a great movie but not top 10 of all times. And I don't personallly think John Wayne was capable of making a top 10 movie. But thats just my opinion.
