DiggFacebookLinkedIn MySpace PrintAAA.Having already earned a spot in the 7-on-7 State Tournament, the goal for Abilene High in Saturday’s Abilene 7-on-7 State Qualifying Tournament was to face top competition in preparation for next month’s event in College Station.

The Eagles got everything they wanted and then some, pulling out three close games at Shotwell Stadium to sweep Pool E, which included three other state-bound teams.

Abilene High, the defending Class 5A Division II state champion, opened with a 33-25 victory over Arlington Bowie in a rematch of last fall’s quarterfinal playoff. The Eagles followed with a 47-46 win over Snyder and another one-point win, 34-33, over Stephenville. All three games went down to the final possession, which was just fine with AHS 7-on-7 coach Joe Galloway.

“All these teams have already qualified, so this is what you run into (at state),” Galloway said. “I’ve been doing this a long time, since it started (1998). If you can stop a good team like these guys one time a half, that’s all you can do. It’s an offensive game.”

Like AHS, Bowie and Stephenville will compete in the Division I state tournament (Class 4A and 5A teams) on July 9-10 at Texas A&M’s Penberthy Intramural Fields. Snyder has a berth in the Division II tournament (Class 1A-3A), which will be played July 8-9.

Bowie bounced back from the opening loss to win its last two games and finish second in the pool, beating Stephenville, 33-30, and Snyder, 39-30. Snyder, which beat Stephenville 48-28 to start the day, finished third in the pool.

The Abilene High-Bowie game was played in temperatures about 50 degrees warmer than when the Eagles beat the Volunteers 35-7 at Arlington’s Maverick Stadium on Dec. 4. Josh Welch had three touchdown receptions for the Eagles, who were clinging to a 26-25 lead with Bowie driving late in the game when Vincent Migliore intercepted a pass to protect the lead. The turnover led to Welch’s third TD with about a minute to go.

Against both Snyder and Stephenville, Abilene High was able to hold on after giving up late touchdowns. The Eagles were tied with Stephenville 20-20 at halftime, but got two more TD catches from Welch to pull ahead. After the Yellow Jackets scored to get within a point, AHS safety Jake Brooks broke up the conversion pass to preserve the lead.

Galloway said surviving such situation was just what the Eagles needed in one of their final tuneups before state. Abilene High wraps up its summer-league competition Monday.

“What it does for them is it shows that you have to play every play,” Galloway said. “Every series on offense counts, every series on defense counts. Extra points are huge. Lots of games are won and lost on extra points. It shows them the intensity you have to play with. It takes it up a notch and gets us ready for what we’ve got to do.”

Snyder was impressive to say the least. Brownwood has really been a juggernaut as well.
