Win and they are in the round of 16. Lose and who knows. I think they will come out smoking and take it to the Algerians. Go USA!!!

Hey LH as a point of interest except for the host country I have heard that USA citizens brought more tickets than any of the other countries including European countries and England. Strange isn't it?

Soccer is more popular in this country than some want to admit. With the diverse population in the US it will only get more popular.

Man don't those refs know if we lose most of our citizens will go home taking money they would have expended with them. Getting beat is one thing but getting rooked is another thing especially with what happened in the last game.

We've shot ourselves in the feet a few times. That one opportunity where the goalie was on the ground, we should have been able to tap it in.

this may sound like a dumb question but I'm not real informed with the aspects of soccer. How does the US play 2 forwards and the Algerians play 4 defenders?? Isn't that basically the US trying to score with only 2 players vs. 4 defenders???? the Algerians are using 3 forwards vs the 4 US defenders. Am I misunderstanding the implication here????

Yes he did. I saw his interview this morning. Yeah, he'll be 32 in 2014.
That's still relatively young.

and if he stays healthy he can actually play at 36 in the 2018..he would be more like David Beckham by then and be a set up guy instead of goal scorer, but he could do it

It all depends on the formation you want to run. As long as there are 11 guys on the field, you can set it up however you want.

Generally speaking, midfielders are the "creators." They're the setup men, kind of like point guards in basketball, while the forwards are the "finishers." Depending on team strengths and weaknesses, they can switch personnel to fit the team.

Without getting too in-depth, two solid forwards and a midfield that can create opportunities makes for a solid offensive attack. It's the forwards' job to find open space and capitalize on opportunities while it's the midfielders' job to create those opportunities by putting the ball in a position that can put pressure on a defense.

Did that answer your question?

IMO the real hero of this game was Tim Howard because he set up Donovan with the goal with a brilliant throw from his goal to across midfield.

Algeria player slaps female reporter

By Martin Rogers, Yahoo! Sports
2 hours, 30 minutes ago

PRETORIA, South Africa – Algeria soccer player Rafik Saifi slapped a female journalist across the face as the aftermath of the United States’ dramatic World Cup victory turned ugly at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Wednesday night.

While walking through the interview zone, Saifi spotted writer Asma Halimi, who works for Algerian newspaper Competition, and struck her with his open hand in front of dozens of witnesses. Halimi responded by striking the player in the mouth.

Saifi then threw a sports drink bottle at a wall in the interview area, as Halimi was ushered away by security staff.

Saifi came on as substitute for the last five minutes of the USA’s 1-0 victory.

“I said nothing to him and he reached over and hit me,” Halimi said to Yahoo! Sports. “So I hit him back. I said nothing to him first.”

It is understood that Saifi and Halimi had previously had a difference of opinion over an article she wrote for her newspaper.

“She was standing there and the guy came here and he hit her,” said Francisco Aguilar Chang, a reporter from Guatemala who witnessed the incident. “Then she hit him back and her nail caught his lip.”

Saifi and Algerian football association officials refused to comment when quizzed by Yahoo! Sports.

The Algerian team has come under heavy criticism in its homeland after a disappointing World Cup in which it finished at the bottom of Group C and was knocked out of the tournament.

When asked if she would launch an official complaint with governing body FIFA and the Algerian F.A., Halimi replied: “Of course.”

Martin Rogers is a staff writer for Yahoo! Sports. Send Martin a question or comment for potential use in a future column or webcast.

This is great and soccer popularity can only increase in the USA now. This game will help men's soccer like it did to women's soccer in when our women beat China in the World Cup.

Great news indeed! Hello USA soccer!

Great news indeed! Hello USA soccer!

Women's soccer started becoming very popular in the USA after the game with China in 1999 at the World Cup Championship Game. Success started and the Women are a respected national power in soccer and have won several World Cups and Olympics and are very competitive. With this game the men may do the same thing.

What I mean is that this game may do for Men's Soccer in the USA what the China game in 1999 did for Women's Soccer in the USA.

As an interesting note Brandi's husband Jerry Smith has been the women's soccer coach at Santa Clara University (in California) for the past 23 years and has had great success. His 2001 team won the National Championship in the NCAA Women's Soccer tournament. He was very supporting of Brandi and went to watch her play professionally and in the olympics and world cups.

Algeria just had a 0-0 tie with England who was number 3 in the world and people say well we didn't win by enough. We won our group for the first time since 1930 thats a pretty big deal no matter how you slice it.

I agree saying that call the guy from Mali made was racism I don't buy he blew his whistle way too quick to think the U.S. might score I have to call a penalty... Why did he randomly pick that corner because we had about 6 other ones that game. He just blew a call and I think that is probably as far as it goes.

Also Whitlock do some research before you right an article the Egypt team they beat to make the tournament is ranked 10th in the world (we're 14th). Everyone is entitled to an opinion but two things bother me 1. Noone is saying it is on the level of the Miracle on Ice 2. If you are going to right an article do a little research before you write it. I guess your reputation of being the Howard Stern of sports will continue.
