Actually, it was a good call. The goalie had come out. Thus the last defender (the one standing on the line) became the goalie. The Mexican player was behind the goalie, making it offsides. Sounds wierd, but a good call.

The first round is all about points. A tie is not a bad thing as both teams receive points. The goal is to get enough points to advance to the 2nd round. This is why you will see more ties as the weaker teams 'pack in' their defense to secure points. Once the 2nd round begins there has to be a winner as it is 'knock out' from then on. You will not see any ties once the 2nd round begins.

Not just two ties: A 1-1 tie and a 0-0 tie.

This is why I think soccer will never catch on with the American sports fan. We're wired to (a) want a lot of scoring and (b) expect a winner every time.

I would much rather watch soccer than golf or tennis. Talk about watching paint dry.

Soccer is a game of strategy and teamwork. 11 players must work together to be successful. Sound familiar? When this happens, a team is successful. I watch 40-50 soccer games a year (because of my son). I can tell you that no sport is more physically demanding or mentally draining.

Try it, you might like it. ;)

You don't have to convert me. I'm just saying this is why our culture doesn't seem to "get it" with most of the rest of the world -- we're used to higher scoring sports, and we want winners and losers. :)

I know what you mean. It is ashame because soccer is such a pure sport.

I know the passion that other countries have for soccer. I lived in Italy for 2 years and experienced it first hand. A beautiful thing.

My wife's best friend is getting married in England on July 10, and my wife will be in the wedding. So, as it turns out, we'll be in England for the final on July 11. I'm looking forward to the experience in a nation that's crazy about the game.

Congrats on the tie team USA even if the one goal was a lucky one! If I remember correctly the ref. keeps track of the extra time and adds it to the game time,I think it has to do with how many time delays there was.

Allowance is made in either period for all time lost through:
• substitutions
• assessment of injury to players
• removal of injured players from the field of play for treatment
• wasting time
• any other cause
The allowance for time lost is at the discretion of the referee.

This is from the FIFA website in the laws section. So the referee is the only one that knows how much he will add.

The ref sends how much time he is putting back on the clock to the scoreboard and they announce it and the broadcasts put it on their scoreboard
