So somebody PLEASE tell me, do I tip the sonic girl when she brings my food or not? I keep getting different answers on this one.

Well crap, now I feel cheap. I have been going with the "no you dont tip em" advice.

Just looked at the old thread. Can anyone give confirmation that these people are paid like restaurant servers (i.e. less than minimum wage and expected to get much of their income from tips)? I'd feel bad if so, because I never assumed that. I assumed they were all getting at least minimum wage.

Just the same, I wish they'd just stop the game-playing, pay them differently and end the questions about tipping. If it meant the cost of the food goes up 10-15% to pay for it, so be it. I hate tipping games.

One of my daughters worked at Sonic a while back and the servers do get min wage but I still tip them. I dont give them as much as I do a regular server but a buck or two.

That makes sense. I've tipped them a buck or two from time to time (a buck if ordering just for me, maybe two if ordering for my wife and me), rationalizing it's not "full service" that warranted 15-20%. I'd have felt bad if they really were compensated as if they were expected to get 15% tips like servers in a full service sit-down style restaurant.

If I have cash, I tip a few dollars, or change + a dollar or so.

Most of the time I only have debit card though, and none of their machines will let you tip on top. which is why I have to do drive-through.

I let them keep the change usually.

The girl I know that works there gets paid $8 an hour to walk and carry food. So it's not like they are relying on the tips like a real restaurant.

I see how it's nice and all, but I don't see why people feel obligated to tip. I'd rather tip someone at a shoe store who is running back and forth from the back and going up ladders then someone who walks 40 feet.

Our Mr. Jims pizza adds in a "Delivery Charge" when I order online and pay with a card. It then asks for me to ADD the amount of the tip. Question: Should this "Delivery Charge" be counted as part of the tip?????

I understand what you are saying but to me if it is a school kid who is taking their time to work for cash rather than sit on their butt I feel they deserve a little tip from me. If they will spend their summer or off time putting up with some of the jerks who come to the sonic they are probably tomorrows leaders.

I always tip $1-2. They seem to really appreciate it.

 Crap! I thought you said should you "trip" the waitress! I was gonna say no.... ......but being as you said "tip", I guess I'll say yes, if the service warrants it. My meal last night at the Sonic cost $10.64, I gave her a $20 bill and took only $8 in change back.......... If I would've went through the drive-thru I wouldn't have tipped at all.

I've had several instances lately where a carhop has just assumed that I was going to tip them and started to walk off. When they do that, I demand all of my change. Otherwise, I give them around a 10% tip.
