I have been trying for months the get a copy of my DD 214 from the VA. I was never able to do this. Supposedly my records were destroyed in a fire in St. Louis. About 3 weeks ago I used a company called Touchstone and was able to get it. It costs me $ 100.00 to get it. My question is "Why can the Veterans Administration provide my records to Touchstone but when I requested them they were not available?" I just wonder if they have a deal with these type of companies. Are government officials making money off this? Just really p_sses me off.

I requested a copy of my own, from the late '60's to mid '70's. Received it in about 4 weeks, no charge, no problem.

I was in the Air Force and was discharged in 1974. As I said the VA said those records were destroyed in a fire in St. Louis. I don't know but it sounds like a bunch of BS to me.

I know another military man (Army) who's records were supposedly burned in that St. Louis fire.

I must agree. I was in the AF from 1967-1974. As I said, no problem obtaining a copy. I have no idea what I did with my original. I know I had it and I know where I had it, but it's not there! I just don't understand why someone stole into my home and only took a DD214!!!!:inlove:

Hey MUSTANG....what I did when I got off of active duty was take a copy down to the courthouse in Sinton....had a notary notarize it, and then had it put on file at the courthouse. Now anytime I need one...I just go to good ole San Pat and pick one up. Hope that helps.

Yes it does. I also got a PM from another poster telling me the same thing. Thank you. I will be doing that and numerous copies will be locked up in my gun safe. I'm not paying another $ 100.00 for my DD 214 again.

Thanks again to both of you.

It should all be on disk by now anyhow.

They archived everything they were storing over 10+ years ago.

I just recently requested a copy of mine for Loan Purposes...I received it 2.5 weeks later the mail on a cd....it even had a link to where I could go and download it.

USAF

1970-71 Boot camp-Lackland AFB-San Antonio
1971-Tech School-Keeseler AFB-Biloxi, MS-Auto track radar(We were told that we would be going to Monkey Mountain in Vietnam after tech school. The use of B-52 bombers was pretty much halted by the time my school was complete. I was sent to the worst place in the world. CALIFORNIA
1972-1974 Fort Bragg, CA.-323rd ATC-Remote radar site used to train navigators in radar jamming and electronic counter measures.

I enlisted with great hopes of going to Vietnam. That didn't happen. Now that I am much older and wiser I realize how lucky I was not to be sent there.

Ah, just think of all the things you missed at Monkey Mountain!

Mosquitos
Heat
Incoming rockets/mortar
Heat
Spying on NVN communications
Mosquitos
Talking on UHF to fighter folks like me
Heat
Remote, minimal facilities
Mosquitos
The pleasure of going home after a year
Heat

Boy, you sure are lucky!

Here is my military bio

U.S. Army

11/70 entered the Army and went to basic training at Ft. Ord California.
A group of us "slick sleeves" flew from Dallas to Monterey California. It was my first plane ride. On the way, I saw a big black sargent walking up towards the front of the plane. I assumed he was going to Ft. Ord as well. I asked him if he was going to Ft. Ord as well, and he just glared at me. Turns out, he was a Marine going to San Diego. I'm lucky he didn't dismember my neck from my body.

12/70 Had my first K.P. duty at Ft. Ord. It was right before Christmas and I was outside peeling potatoes and listening to Christmas carols on some speakers that looked like they were from the TV show M.A.S.H. Took a bus home to Sweetwater for Christmas that took 24 hours.
Finished basic as a expert marksman hitting 94 out of 100 targets including night fire with tracers.

3/71 Went to AIT training at Southeastern Signal School, Ft. Gordon Ga. 72B20, a Comm Center Specialist with Crypto security clearence. While in class, couldn't take any notes as everything was classified. I remember one piece of apparatus that had 23 steps just to turn the thing on. It was the beginning of my short-term memory loss. I had to pass that class and get home before my son was born. If I didn't pass, I couldn't go home. Pressure.

6/71 My arrival at Ft. Riley Kansas and the BIG RED ONE. HHC, 1st Engr Bn. 2 trips to Germany for Reforger. Many beers.

I really don't know much about Monkey Mountain. We were told that there was a radar site on the top of it and we would be working with the B52 bombers. We were told that nobody had been killed at the radar site but that there would be mortar attacks sometimes.
